Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. In ice hockey, two opposing teams use ice hockey sticks to control, advance and shoot a closed, vulcanized, rubber disc called a " puck" into the other team's goal. Each goal is worth one point. The team which scores the most goals is declared the winner. In a formal game, each team has six skaters on the ice at a time, barring any penalties, one of whom is the goaltender. Ice hockey is a full contact sport. Ice hockey is one of the sports featured in the Winter Olympics while its premiere international amateur competition, the IIHF World Championships, are governed by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) for both men's and women's competitions. Island Junior Hockey League (1973–91)
The Island Junior Hockey League is a Junior "B" ice hockey league in Prince Edward Island, Canada, sanctioned by Hockey Canada. History Since being founded in 1996, the IJHL has been strictly a Junior "B" League—one tier below the Maritime Junior A Hockey League and two tiers below the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League which both draw from the same region. The IJHL shares its name with the former Junior "A" league that played in the same region, the Island Junior Hockey League. In 2002, the O'Leary Eagles won the Don Johnson Cup as Maritime Junior B champions. Nine years later, in 2011, the Kensington Vipers repeated the act as Maritime champions, following up their success again in 2013. The Don Johnson Cup has been generally dominated by the Nova Scotia Junior B Hockey League. Ontario Hockey League
The Ontario Hockey League (OHL; french: Ligue de hockey de l'Ontario (LHO)) is one of the three major junior ice hockey leagues which constitute the Canadian Hockey League. The league is for players aged 16–19. There are exceptions for overage players of 20 years of age. There are currently 20 teams in the OHL; seventeen in Ontario, two in Michigan, and one in Pennsylvania. The league was founded in 1980 when its predecessor, the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League, formally split away from the Ontario Hockey Association, joining the Canadian Hockey League, Canadian Major Junior Hockey League and its direct affiliation with Hockey Canada. The 'Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League'' (formerly the Nova Scotia Junior B Hockey League) is a Junior "B" ice hockey league in Nova Scotia, Canada, sanctioned by Hockey Canada. The winner of the Nova Scotia playoffs competes for the Don Johnson Cup, the Atlantic Junior "B" Crown. History The Mainland Junior B Hockey League was formed in 1980 by Al Hollingsworth. Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League
The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) is a Canadian Junior ice hockey league and member of the Canadian Junior Hockey League and Northern Ontario Hockey Association. The winner of the NOJHL playoffs competes for the Dudley Hewitt Cup with the winners of the Ontario Junior Hockey League and the Superior International Junior Hockey League. The winner of the Dudley Hewitt Cup then moves on to compete for the Royal Bank Cup. The modern NOJHL The current incarnation of the NOJHL comprises twelve teams located in Ontario and Michigan. Northern Junior Hockey League
The Northern Junior Hockey League (NJHL) was an independent regional junior ice hockey league based in Jamestown, New York. The league operated from 2008 to 2010. History United Junior Hockey League The United Junior Hockey League (UJHL) was created in 2008 when three teams — the Penn Enforcers, Philadelphia Thunder, and Wooster Oilers transferred from the America East Hockey League to form the UJHL along with the additional expansion teams — Findlay Grrrowl and Jamestown Jets. In August 2008, after the America East Hockey League went dark for the 2008–2009 season, the UJHL accepted four Canadian teams that were to be new members of the AEHL into the UJHL. North Saskatchewan Junior B Hockey League
The now defunct North Saskatchewan Junior B Hockey League (NSJHL) was an independent, successful Junior "B" ice hockey league in Saskatchewan, Canada, sanctioned by Hockey Canada. The league comprised teams from cities and towns such as Saskatoon and Melfort, situated in the northern part of the province of Saskatchewan. Conversely, a second Junior "B" league, the South Saskatchewan (SSJHL) included teams which were located in towns primarily in the southern part of Saskatchewan, such as Regina, Weyburn and Melville. Players who played at the Junior "B" level were approximately 14-20 years old, and Junior "B" was considered the entry level and a "feeder league" into Junior Hockey in Canada (except where Junior "C" or "D" teams existed). New Brunswick Junior Hockey League
The New Brunswick Junior Hockey League (NBJHL) was a Canadian Junior ice hockey league in the province of New Brunswick. The NBJHL was in competition for the Callaghan Cup and Centennial Cup as a Junior A league. History Possibly founded in 1969, the NBJHL was the premier Jr. A league of the province of New Brunswick. In 1970, the league was relegated to Tier II Junior A and competition for the Centennial Cup. In 1982–83, the league was in direct competition for fans with the American Hockey League, who put two of their Semi-Professional teams in the NBJHL's Jr. A markets. In 1983, the Fredericton Red Wings folded, leaving the Moncton Hawks as the only strong team in the league. The Mid-Western Junior Hockey League (MWJHL) was a junior ice hockey league in Ontario, Canada, sanctioned by the Ontario Hockey Association from 1973 until 2007.
