Phyllophaga
''Phyllophaga'' is a very large genus (more than 900 species) of New World scarab beetles in the subfamily Melolonthinae. Common names for this genus and many other related genera in the subfamily Melolonthinae are May beetles, June bugs, and July beetles. They range in size from and are blackish or reddish-brown in colour, without prominent markings, and often rather hairy ventrally. These beetles are nocturnal, coming to lights in great numbers. The generic name is derived from the Greek words ''phyllon'' (φυλλον), which means "leaf", and ' (φαγος), which means "eater", with a plural ending. Lifecycle The lifecycle takes about one year. Females lay 60 to 75 eggs over a period of about two weeks in midsummer. The white egg at first is elliptical (1.5 mm by 2.1 mm) but becomes more spherical as the larva inside develops. Bucky Bug is a beetle who appears in Disney comics. He first appeared in the ''Silly Symphony'' Sunday comic strip, and later appeared as a regular feature in the comic book ''Walt Disney's Comics and Stories''. Silly Symphony Bucky Bug first appeared in the initial ''Silly Symphony'' strip, beginning January 10, 1932; he was the first character to debut in Disney comics. He was initially drawn by Earl Duvall, who subsequently left Disney and joined Warner Brothers where he created Buddy (Looney Tunes). Bucky only had one film appearance, in " Bugs in Love", released in October 1932. Bucky Bug also appeared in ''Walt Disney's Comics and Stories''. The ''June Bug'' (or ''Aerodrome #3'') was an American "pioneer era" aircraft designed and flown by Glenn H. Curtiss and built by the Aerial Experiment Association (A.E.A) in 1908. The ''June Bug'' is famous for winning the first aeronautical prize ever awarded in the United States, the Scientific American Cup. Design and development The competition offered a solid silver sculpted trophy, and $25,000 in cash, to be awarded to whoever made the first public flight of over 1 kilometer (3,280 ft). ''Funky Winkerbean'' is an American comic strip by Tom Batiuk. Distributed by North America Syndicate, a division of King Features Syndicate, it appears in more than 400 newspapers worldwide. While Batiuk was a 23-year-old middle school art teacher in Elyria, Ohio, he began drawing cartoons while supervising study hall. It is found in the eastern United States and Canada, where it is most abundant in the South. It is sometimes confused with the related southwestern species figeater beetle '' Cotinis mutabilis'', which is less destructive. The green June beetle is active during daylight hours.
