July 2018 Lombok Earthquake
A Mw 6.4 earthquake struck the island of Lombok on the morning of 29 July 2018 at a shallow depth of . Widespread damage was reported in the area, and authorities confirmed that 20 people were killed in the earthquake while hundreds were injured. The epicentre was located in Sembalun Subdistrict, East Lombok Regency. The earthquake was a foreshock to the larger 6.9 earthquake which struck the island a week later. Tectonic setting Lombok lies on the destructive plate boundary between the Australian Plate and the Sunda Plate. To the east of Bali the plate boundary starts to involve a collision between the leading edge of the Australian continent and the eastern part of the Sunda Arc and the western end of the Banda Arc. In response to this collision, the arc itself has begun to be pushed over the back-arc Bali Basin along a major thrust fault, the long Flores Thrust. Moment Magnitude Scale
The moment magnitude scale (MMS; denoted explicitly with or Mw, and generally implied with use of a single M for magnitude) is a measure of an earthquake's magnitude ("size" or strength) based on its seismic moment. It was defined in a 1979 paper by Thomas C. Hanks and Hiroo Kanamori. Similar to the local magnitude scale, local magnitude/Richter scale () defined by Charles Francis Richter in 1935, it uses a logarithmic scale; small earthquakes have approximately the same magnitudes on both scales. Despite the difference, news media often says "Richter scale" when referring to the moment magnitude scale. The Banda Arc (main arc, Inner, and Outer) is a set of island arcs in eastern Indonesia. It is the result of the collision of a continent and an intra-oceanic island arc. The presently active arc is located on what appears to be oceanic crust whereas the associated subduction trench is underlain by continental crust. The convergence of the Indo-Australian plates and Eurasia resulted in the formation of the Sunda and Banda island arcs. Mount Rinjani ( id, Gunung Rinjani) is an active volcano in Indonesia on the island of Lombok.
