July 2018 Australian Federal By-elections
The July 2018 Australian federal by-elections, known colloquially as Super Saturday, were five by-elections held on 28 July 2018, to fill vacancies in the Australian House of Representatives caused by the resignations in May 2018 of five MPs. Three MPs of the Australian Labor Party and the Centre Alliance's sole MP resigned due to dual citizenship concerns after the High Court ruled on 8 May 2018 that Senator Katy Gallagher was ineligible to have been elected to the Australian Senate for being a dual citizen, in similar circumstances to four of the lower house MPs. Labor MP for Perth Tim Hammond resigned for family reasons on the same day, causing the first time ever that five by-elections would be held on the same day in Australia. All sitting MPs apart from Hammond re-contested and won the ensuing by-elections. Australian House Of Representatives
The House of Representatives is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Australia, the upper house being the Senate. Its composition and powers are established in Chapter I of the Constitution of Australia. 2018 Fremantle By-election
A by-election for the Australian House of Representatives seat of Fremantle took place on Saturday 28 July 2018, following the resignation of incumbent Labor MP Josh Wilson. In early counting, within 90 minutes of the close of polls, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's psephologist Antony Green's electoral computer had predicted Labor to retain the electorate with an increased margin. This election is notable for being the first time that a Liberal Democrats candidate was included in the two-candidate-preferred counting in an Australian federal election. Brett Whiteley (politician)
Brett David Whiteley (born 1 July 1960, Burnie, Tasmania) is an Australian politician. Whiteley was a Member of the House of Representatives representing the federal division of Braddon. He was elected at the 2013 federal election for the Liberal Party, defeating Labor's Sid Sidebottom, but was defeated after one term by Labor's Justine Keay at the 2016 federal election. Prior to his election to federal parliament, Whiteley was a multi- Member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly representing the state electorate of Braddon from the 2002 state election until his defeat at the 2010 state election. In his first speech to state parliament, Whiteley stated that in 1993 he opened, in conjunction with two other people, a Christian training and retreat centre in Sheffield. Justine Keay
Justine Terri Keay (born 18 March 1975) is a former Australian politician. She was the Labor member for Braddon in the House of Representatives, serving from the 2016 federal election held on 2 July 2016 until her resignation on 10 May 2018 as a part of the 2017–18 Australian parliamentary eligibility crisis and then since the 2018 Braddon by-election. She replaced the Liberal Party's Brett Whiteley. Keay was an alderman for Devonport City Council for seven years, resigning on 26 May 2016. She has a Bachelor of Arts in History and Geography from the University of Tasmania. She worked in the television industry with Southern Cross Television and WIN Television in Western Australia before gaining further qualifications from Murdoch University in Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management and has received a Graduate Diploma in Psychology from Monash University. The Division of Braddon is an Australian electoral division in the state of Tasmania. The current MP is Gavin Pearce of the Liberal Party, who was elected at the 2019 federal election. Leadership spills of the federal parliamentary leadership of the Liberal Party of Australia were held on 21 and 24 August 2018 and were called by the incumbent leader of the party, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. It has been nicknamed "spill week" in the media. Turnbull called the first spill in a regularly scheduled party room meeting of the Liberal Party on 21 August, amid media reports that Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton was considering a challenge. Dutton submitted himself as a candidate for the leadership, but was defeated by Turnbull, who won the ballot 48 votes to 35. Dutton then immediately resigned from the ministry. Dutton requested a second spill motion two days later.
