Julius Woeltz
Julius Edwin Woeltz (1911–1956) was an American artist known for his murals and landscapes. Biography Woeltz was born in San Antonio, Texas, where he first began his art studies under Jose Arpa and alongside Xavier Gonzales. He went on to attend the Academie Julian in France and later the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition to painting, he worked as an art professor for various colleges and universities, including the University of Texas at Austin and Sul Ross State Teachers College where he served as the art director in 1932 and started the summer art colony program. Throughout his career, he painted several regional murals, notably a series of large murals in Alpine, Texas as well as six murals for the U.S. Post Office in Amarillo, Texas. These murals tended to depict landscapes and activities of the surrounding region depicted in the Regionalist style popularized by Thomas Hart Benton. Diego Rivera
Diego María de la Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y Rodríguez, known as Diego Rivera (; December 8, 1886 – November 24, 1957), was a prominent Mexican painter. His large frescoes helped establish the mural movement in Mexican and international art. Between 1922 and 1953, Rivera painted murals in, among other places, Mexico City, Chapingo, and Cuernavaca, Mexico; and San Francisco, Detroit, and New York City, United States. In 1931, a retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; this was before he completed his 27-mural series known as ''Detroit Industry Murals''. Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery
Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery is a United States National Cemetery in the city of San Antonio in Bexar County, Texas. Administered by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, it encompasses , and as of 2014, had over 144,000 interments. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. History Although the Army post in the area was established in 1875, and construction of Fort Sam Houston began the following year, no burials were made in the area that is currently the cemetery until 1926. M. Knoedler & Co. was an art dealership in New York City founded in 1846. When it closed in 2011, amid lawsuits for fraud, it was one of the oldest commercial art galleries in the US, having been in operation for 165 years. History Knoedler dated its origin to 1846, when French dealers Goupil & Cie opened a branch in New York. Goupil & Cie was an extremely dynamic print-publishing house founded in Paris in 1827. The Legion of Honor, formally known as the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, is an art museum in San Francisco, California. Located in Lincoln Park, the Legion of Honor is a component of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, which also administers the de Young Museum. History The land on which the Legion of Honor stands was once the city-owned Golden Gate Cemetery, established in 1870 and closed in 1909.
