Julian Fraser
Julian Fraser (born 5 July 1950) is a British Virgin Islander politician who formerly belonged to the opposition Virgin Islands Party in the British Virgin Islands, and in August 2018 formed a new party, Progressives United. He is the current Leader of the Opposition. He is currently the elected member for the Third District (Sea Cow's Bay), a position which he has held since the 1999 general election. He was elected as Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party on 28 May 2014. After the 2015 general election, he was officially appointed the Leader of the Opposition under the Constitution. On 30 November 2016, Andrew Fahie replaced Julian Fraser as party leader, making Fraser the first leader of the Virgin Islands Party (and the only one so far) not to ascend to either the Chief Minister or Premiership. Brookfield Place (New York City)
Brookfield Place (previously named and still commonly referred to as the World Financial Center) is a shopping center and office building complex in the New York City borough of Manhattan. It is located in the Battery Park City neighborhood, across West Street from the World Trade Center, and overlooks the Hudson River. The complex is currently owned and managed by Brookfield Properties, a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management. House Of Assembly Of The British Virgin Islands
The House of Assembly of the British Virgin Islands, until 2007 known as the Legislative Council, has 15 members: 13 directly elected for four-year terms (nine in single-seat constituencies and four "at large"), and two ''ex officio'' members (the Attorney General and a Speaker chosen from outside the house). Sittings of the House of Assembly are divided into " terms" with each term following from a general election. The House of Assembly is presently sitting its fourth term, but the first term of the House of Assembly followed the 15th term of the old Legislative Council. Accordingly, in aggregate the legislature is sitting its 19th term since the restoration of democracy in the Territory. Each term has a series of "sittings". 2011 British Virgin Islands General Election
General elections were held in the British Virgin Islands on 7 November 2011. The result was a decisive victory for the opposition National Democratic Party (NDP) led by Orlando Smith over the incumbent Virgin Islands Party (VIP), led by Premier Ralph T. O'Neal. No minor parties or independent candidates won any seats. Background The House of Assembly was dissolved on 13 September 2011, by the Governor, Mr William Boyd McCleary, on advice from the Premier. However, the date of the election was not announced until 23 September 2011. 2007 British Virgin Islands General Election
General elections were held in the British Virgin Islands on 20 August 2007. The result was a landslide victory for the opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP) over the incumbent National Democratic Party (NDP). The VIP took 7 of the 9 district seats (of the remaining district seats, only 1 was taking by the NDP; the other was taken by Alvin Christopher, an independent candidate endorsed by the VIP). The VIP also took 3 out of the 4 territorial at-large seats. 2003 British Virgin Islands General Election
General elections were held in the British Virgin Islands on 16 June 2003. It was won by the opposition National Democratic Party (NDP), which took 54.4% of the vote and 8 of the 13 available seats on the Legislative Council. After the election the NDP formed a Government for the first time in its history. Both major parties - the NDP and the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) actually increased their share of the overall vote at the expense of minority parties and independents. No independents or any minority parties won any seats. The NDP won all four of the territorial-at-large seats. Results The NDP's victory was largely as a result of sweeping all four of the At-large seats. British Virgin Islands 2021 Commission Of Inquiry
The British Virgin Islands 2021 Commission of Inquiry was a public inquiry commissioned by the then Governor of the British Virgin Islands, Augustus Jaspert. The terms of reference were to make "a full, faithful and impartial inquiry into whether there was information that corruption, abuse of office or other serious dishonesty in relation to officials, whether statutory, elected or public, may have taken place in recent years; if there were such information, to consider the conditions which allowed such conduct to take place and whether they may still exist; and, if appropriate, to make independent recommendations with a view to improving the standards of governance and the operation of the agencies of law enforcement and justice in the Territory". Gary Hickinbottom
Sir Gary Robert Hickinbottom (born 22 December 1955), is a retired British judge. In 2008, he became the fourth solicitor to be appointed a High Court judge, after Michael Sachs in 1993, Lawrence Collins in 2000, and Henry Hodge in 2004. Legal career He was admitted as a solicitor in 1981, and later became a partner at McKenna & Co (now part of CMS Cameron McKenna). He became a recorder in 1994 and then a circuit judge in 2001. He became Chief Social Security Commissioner and Child Support Commissioner in 2003, and Chief Pension Appeal Commissioner. He has also sat as a deputy High Court judge. Judicial career Hickinbottom's appointment as a High Court judge was announced in September 2008, with his assignment to the King's Bench Division. He was knighted by the Queen at Buckingham Palace on 20 February 2009. The Cabinet of the British Virgin Islands (formerly referred to as the Executive Council, or sometimes ExCo) is the collective decision-making body of the British Virgin Islands government. National Democratic Party (British Virgin Islands)
The National Democratic Party (or NDP) is a political party in the British Virgin Islands. In the 2019 general election the NDP was voted out of office; it most recently held power after winning the 2015 general election. Leadership The party had only one leader for the first 19 years of its existence: Orlando Smith. In June 2018 Orlando Smith announced he would be stepping down, and on 23 June Myron Walwyn was elected as the new party leader. ''The BVI Beacon'' is a weekly British Virgin Islands newspaper founded in June 1984 and published on the island of Tortola. The ''Beacon'' is owned and published by local businessman Russell Harrigan, also the publisher of ''Business BVI''. The online version of the newspaper was founded on February 14, 2001. The paper's motto is "The light that comes from wisdom never goes out." The paper is published on Thursdays, and organised into sections: Local News, Business, Weekend and Culture and Sports. The first ''Beacon'' cost 35 cents. In 2018, the price was raised to $1. History The first issue of the ''Beacon'' was published on 7 June 1984. Ralph O'Neal
Ralph Telford O'Neal, OBE (15 December 1933 – 11 November 2019) was a British Virgin Islander politician. He was the longest ever serving elected representative in the British Virgin Islands, and served as Chief Minister (when the office was so titled) or Premier of the British Virgin Islands for three terms. Politics Ralph O'Neal was first elected to represent the district for Virgin Gorda and Anegada on 1 September 1975, and he held that seat continuously until the 2015 general election.
