Julian Fane (British Diplomat)
The Honourable Julian Henry Charles Fane (10 October 1827 – 19 April 1870) was a British diplomat and poet. (DNB volume xviii p. 178) He was a Cambridge Apostle. Life Fane was the fifth and youngest son of John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland, by Lady Priscilla Anne, daughter of William Wellesley-Pole, 3rd Earl of Mornington. He was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the 'Apostles', chancellor's medallist in 1850 and graduated M.A. in 1851. Between 1856 and 1858 he was secretary of legation at St. Petersburg and first secretary and acting ''chargé d'affaires'' at Paris from 1865 to 1867. An extract from a letter written by Edward Granville, the 3rd Earl St Germans, to his son (dated Aug 5, 1850) reads: "Julian Fane has just gained his gold medal at Cambridge from his best English poem. is Motherwent down to hear him recite it. Heinrich Heine
Christian Johann Heinrich Heine (; born Harry Heine; 13 December 1797 – 17 February 1856) was a German poet, writer and literary critic. He is best known outside Germany for his early lyric poetry, which was set to music in the form of '' Lieder'' (art songs) by composers such as Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. Heine's later verse and prose are distinguished by their satirical wit and irony. He is considered a member of the Young Germany movement. His radical political views led to many of his works being banned by German authorities—which, however, only added to his fame. He spent the last 25 years of his life as an expatriate in Paris. Fane Family
Fane is an English surname of Welsh origins that belongs to a family who have produced a number of notable members. The family originated with Ivon Vane, who was a Welsh landowner and mercenary captain in the service of the Black Prince. Ivon Vane or John Fane, as he was known in English, was one of three captains who captured King John II of France at the battle of Poitiers 1356. He was knighted and shared in the ransom monies, which made him very wealthy. He settled in Kent and founded the two notable families of Fane, whose members became the Earls of Westmoreland, and Vane, who became the Earls of Darlington. Both families have golden gauntlets on their crest in memory of the surrender of King John. William Grenfell, 1st Baron Desborough
William Henry Grenfell, 1st Baron Desborough, (30 October 1855 – 9 January 1945) was a British athlete, sportsman, public servant and politician. He sat in the House of Commons first for the Liberal Party and then for the Conservatives between 1880 and 1905 when he was raised to the peerage. He also was President of the Thames Conservancy Board for thirty-two years. Ethel Anne Priscilla Grenfell, Baroness Desborough (née Fane; 27 June 1867 – 28 May 1952) was a British society hostess. Life Ethel (Ettie) Fane was born into an aristocratic family. However, at the age of three she was orphaned when her father, Julian Fane, the younger son of an earl, died at the age of 42, soon after the death of Ettie's mother. Fane married William Grenfell in 1887. He was at the time untitled but he was a Member of Parliament, first for the Liberal Party and then for the Conservative Party. William and Ethel had a happy marriage, but Ethel also had male admirers. One of those was Archie Ian Gordon who was the son of John Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Marquess of Aberdeen and Temair.
