Jules Sof
Jules George Sof (born 25 February 1914) was, before Suriname became independent, a member of the Estates of Suriname for the NPS. Biography Sof was born as a son of Egbertus Charles Godfried Sof in Paramaribo. In 1954, he joined the main board of the NPS of which he for some time also was the secretary. A few months later he was elected in the parliament at a by-election (caused by the death of NPS member of parliament F.J.A. Murray) in the Marowijne District. At the 1955 Surinamese general election the NPS lost almost all the seats in parliament and also Sof was not reelected. He was civil servant in Moengo when he could return in 1958 to the Estates of Suriname. This time he would stay 11 years member of parliament and he was also the NPS-faction leader. At the general election in 1969 Sof was unsuccessfully the NPS candidate for the district Upper-Marowijne. Estates Of Suriname
The National Assembly (''De Nationale Assemblée'', ''The Assembly'', commonly abbreviated "DNA") is the Parliament, representing the legislative branch of government in Suriname. It is a unicameral legislature. The assembly has been situated in the former park house at the Independence Square in Paramaribo, after a fire destroyed the old building of representation on 1 August 1996. A reconstruction of the old building was completed in 2022. The 51 members of parliament are elected every five years by open list proportional representation on the basis of the country's component districts. Moengo
Moengo () is a town in Suriname, located in the Marowijne district, between Paramaribo and the border town Albina on the Cottica River. Moengo is also a resort (municipality) in the district of Marowijne. Moengo was the capital of Marowijne District between 1932 and 1945. The current capital is Albina. History Moengo started as a Maroon village on top of a hill overlooking the Cottica River. The settlement was later abandoned due to the difficulty of building houses on the bauxite rich ground. In 1916, Alcoa founded the first bauxite mine in Suriname, and this marks the beginning of the current town. Moengo was designed in 1919 to house 4,000 people. It would become a major centre for the mining and storage of bauxite. Moengo was a segregated town. The Order of Orange-Nassau ( nl, Orde van Oranje-Nassau, links=no) is a civil and military Dutch order of chivalry founded on 4 April 1892 by the queen regent, Emma of the Netherlands. Paramaribo (; ; nicknamed Par'bo) is the capital and largest city of Suriname, located on the banks of the Suriname River in the Paramaribo District. Marowijne District
Marowijne is a district of Suriname, located on the north-east coast. Marowijne's capital city is Albina, with other towns including Moengo and Wanhatti. The district borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, French Guiana to the east, the Surinamese district of Sipaliwini to the south, and the Surinamese districts of Commewijne and Para to the west. Marowijne's population is 18,294 and the district has an area of 4,627 km2. History Marowijne is also home to many Maroon '' palenques.'' The Maroons are descendants of slaves who escaped from their Dutch masters centuries ago, particularly slaves who escaped from Suriname's huge plantations during the 18th century. Frederick James Alexander Murray
Frederick James Alexander Murray (5 September 1907 – 6 May 1954) was a Surinamese politician of the NPS. Murray was born in Waterloo, Nickerie District. At the age of 17, he started work as an assistant teacher. Later he became a qualified teacher after which he studied in Europe. Upon return in Suriname, he worked as a teacher.
