Jules Elby
Jules Désiré Elby (25 November 1857 – 2 July 1933) was a French industrialist and Democratic Republican Alliance politician who represented Pas-de-Calais in the Senate between 1923 and 1933. He was also Director-General of the Bruay Mining Company. Early life Elby was born in Gonnelieu, Cambrésis, the son of Jules Émile Elby (a cotton weaver) and Virginie Josèphe Mignot. At the age of 18 he entered the Bruay Mining Company as a labourer. Career Elby remained with the Bruay Mining Company for 58 years, becoming Director-General in 1899 and finally Chairman of the Board of Directors in 1924. During the First World War he was commissioned by the French Army to administer Bruay-la-Buissière and ensure that the town maintained its coal production, despite its very close proximity to the fighting on the Western Front. The Senate (french: Sénat, ) is the upper house of the French Parliament, with the lower house being the National Assembly, the two houses constituting the legislature of France. The French Senate is made up of 348 senators (''sénateurs'' and ''sénatrices'') elected by part of the country's local councillors (in indirect elections), as well as by representatives of French citizens living abroad. Senators have six-year terms, with half of the seats up for election every three years. Croix De Guerre
The ''Croix de Guerre'' (, ''Cross of War'') is a military decoration of France. It was first created in 1915 and consists of a square-cross medal on two crossed swords, hanging from a ribbon with various degree pins. The decoration was first awarded during World War I, again in World War II, and in other conflicts; the '' croix de guerre des théâtres d'opérations extérieures'' ("cross of war for external theatres of operations") was established in 1921 for these. Château De Remaisnil
The Château de Remaisnil is an 18th-century château situated on the edge of the French village of Remaisnil, in the Somme department of Picardy. It has been a listed historical monument since 1986. Château The house was built in 1760 on the site of a former Medieval castle. For centuries, the house and surrounding lands remained in the same noble family, the viscounts de Butler. In the late nineteenth century it came into the possession of Senator Jules Elby, connected by marriage to the Leroy and du Merle families. A member of the Elby family was involved in the design of the Paris Métro, and a white-tiled underground passageway still exists between the château and its former stables. Henri Elby (1894–1974)
Henri Jules Elby (15 July 1894 – 10 December 1974) was a French industrialist and politician who was a Senator from 1936 to 1944. He was the second son of Jules Elby and Mathilde Leroy, and was raised at the Château de Remaisnil. He served in the French Army during the First World War, during which he was wounded. He ended the war as a lieutenant of artillery. He spent most of his career as a company manager, latterly as President of the Chamber of Commerce of Béthune.
