Juicy Fruit (song)
"Juicy Fruit" is a song written by James Mtume and released as the lead-off single from Mtume's third album, also titled '' Juicy Fruit''. It features lead vocals by Tawatha Agee. The mid-tempo song is Mtume's most well-known, proving enormously successful on R&B radio stations when first released. The song reached number one on the ''Billboard'' Hot R&B Singles chart on June 4, 1983, and remained there for eight weeks. Its success on the ''Billboard'' Pop Singles chart, however, was more modest, reaching number 45. It was ranked at number 15 among the "Tracks of the Year" for 1983 by '' NME''. Though it never reached the top 40, the single was certified as selling one million copies on July 25, 1983. Mtume
Mtume (pronounced ''em-tu-may'') was an American funk and soul group that rose to prominence during the early 1980s and had several R&B hits during its career. Its founder, former percussionist James Mtume, previously played and toured with Miles Davis in the early 1970s. Other members of the group included Reggie Lucas, Philip Field, and vocalist Tawatha Agee. Mtume also gained recognition after having its hit single "Juicy Fruit" extensively sampled by many hip-hop artists, most notably by the Notorious B.I.G. in the 1994 hit song " Juicy". Juicy was an American musical duo consisting of siblings Jerry Barnes and Katreese Barnes. The group is best known for the songs "Sugar Free" and ''Beat Street'' feature song "Beat Street Strut". Career Their debut single "Don't Cha Wanna" was released in 1982 by Arista Records. In the same year they also released their first eponymous album, which made it into Billboard R&B chart the next year. In 1984, their song "Beat Street Strut", released by the same label, appeared in the 1984 musical-drama movie ''Beat Street'' and its gold-certified soundtrack. The song peaked at #46 on ''Billboard'' Dance chart in July 1984. Their second album ''It Takes Two'' was released in 1985. Tony Humphries is an American electronic musician and DJ. He was one of the earliest proponents of house music and has been instrumental in spreading the genre on both sides of the Atlantic. Humphries' work encompasses studio production and remixes, radio slots on WRKS 98.7 Kiss FM and Hot 97, and DJ residencies at clubs including Club Zanzibar (Newark, New Jersey) and Ministry of Sound in London, UK. The Linn LM-1 Drum Computer is a drum machine manufactured by Linn Electronics and released in 1980. It was the first drum machine to use samples of acoustic drums, and one of the first programmable drum machines. Its designer, the American engineer Roger Linn, wanted a machine that would produce more realistic drum sounds and offer more than preset patterns. The LM-1 became a staple of 1980s pop music and helped establish drum machines as credible tools.
