Judith Wright Prize
The Judith Wright Award, also known as the Judith Wright Prize, was awarded annually as part of the ACT Poetry Award between 2005 and 2011 for a book of poems published the previous year in book form by an Australian author. It was awarded for a published collection by an Australian poet. History The ACT Poetry Award for unpublished poets was awarded in 2003 and 2004 by the ACT Government. From 2005 to 2011, there were four prizes awarded: the Rosemary Dobson Award, the David Campbell Award, the Judith Wright Award and the Alec Bolton Award. In 2012, the Government reviewed the ACT Poetry Prize, and developed three new initiatives: the ACT Poetry Prize for a single poem, a Centenary Poetry in ACTION program and Youth Poetry Slams, to begin in ACT schools in 2013. Susan Hawthorne
Susan Hawthorne (born 30 November 1951) is an Australian writer, poet, political commentator and publisher. Together with Renate Klein, she is co-founder and director of Spinifex Press, a leading independent feminist publisher that celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2016 in Melbourne with a festival of radical feminism. She and Klein were named winners of the George Robertson Award, which recognises publishers with 30 years or more service to publishing. Career Hawthorne is an expert in feminist publishing as well as independent publishing generally. She is the English language co-ordinator of The International Alliance of Independent Publishers (based in Paris). Hawthorne has a doctorate in Women's Studies and Political Science from the University of Melbourne, as well as post graduate qualifications in Ancient Greek and Sanskrit and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Philosophy from La Trobe University. Petra White
Petra White is an Australian poet. White was born in Adelaide in 1975, the eldest of six children, and now lives in Berlin with her husband and daughter. Her first published collection of poetry, The Incoming Tide ( John Leonard Press 2007), was shortlisted for the Queensland Premier's Literary Awards and the ACT Poetry Prize. In 2011, five of White's poems were selected for inclusion in the landmark anthology of Australian Poetry, ''Australian Poetry Since 1788''. The poems selected are ''Ricketts Point'', ''Voyage'', ''Woman and Dog'', ''Older Sister'' and ''Notes for the Time Being''. Biography Petra White grew up in Adelaide. Giramondo Publishing (Giramondo Publishing Company) is an independent Australian literary small press founded in 1995. It is a publisher of poetry, fiction and non-fiction by Australian and overseas writers, and works in translation from Chinese, German, Spanish, French and Hindi. J S Harry
J. S. Harry or Jan Harry (4 January 1939 – 20 May 2015) was an Australian poet described as "one of Australian poetry’s keenest satirists, political and social commentators, and perhaps its most ethical agent and antagonist." J. S. Harry was born in South Australia, but soon moved to Sydney, where she remained. She worked as an editor for Radio National and held a residency at Australian National University. A recurrent character in her work was Peter Henry Lepus, a rabbit who name-drops philosophers such as Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein and A. J. Ayer while popping up in the midst of topical events such as the Gulf War. Barry Hill (Australian Writer)
Barry Hill is an Australian historian, writer, and academic. He has written poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and libretti. He is known for his biography of anthropologist Ted Strehlow, called ''Broken Song: T G H Strehlow and Aboriginal Possession'', published in 2002. Early life and education Hill was born in Melbourne. Peter Steele (poet)
Peter Daniel Steele AM (22 August 1939 – 27 June 2012) was an Australian poet and academic, a member of the Jesuit order and a Catholic priest, who was awarded the Christopher Brennan Award, for lifetime achievement in poetry, in 2010. Steele was educated at Christian Brothers' College, Perth; Loyola College, Melbourne; the University of Melbourne; Canisius College, Sydney and the Jesuit Theological College, Melbourne. He was Lockie Fellow at the University of Melbourne and gained an MA and PhD there and joined it English Department in 1966. He later held a Personal Chair in English there and went on to become Emeritus Professor of English at the university. He remained at the university until his death in 2012. Marcella Polain
Marcella Polain (born 1958) is an Australian-resident poet, novelist and short fiction writer. Early life and education Marcella Polain was born in Singapore and migrated to Australia at the age of two with her Irish father and Armenian mother. Polain studied Literature and Creative Arts at Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University). For a short while she attended the Australian Film, Television and Radio School in Sydney. At Western Australian Secondary Teachers' College (now Edith Cowan University), she took a Post Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education. Polain completed a PhD at the University of Western Australia. Career Polain entered the Perth poetry scene in the early 1990s. Martin Harrison (poet)
Martin Harrison (1949 – 6 September 2014) was an Anglo-Australian poet. Born and educated in England, Harrison arrived in Australia in the late 1970s after spending three years in New Zealand. He published poems and limited edition books in London and New Zealand before his first main collection, ''The Distribution of Voice'' (University of Queensland Press),appeared in Australia in 1993. In the 1980s Harrison worked as a literary journalist and reviewer as well as a producer for ABC Radio, where he was closely associated with sound art, new music and experimental radio work. David Brooks (author)
David Gordon Brooks (born 12 January 1953 in Canberra) is an Australian poet, novelist, short-fiction writer and essayist. He is the author of four published novels, four collections of short stories and five collections of poetry, and his work has won or been shortlisted for major prizes. Brooks is a highly intellectual writer, and his fiction has drawn frequent comparison with the writers Italo Calvino and Jorge Luis Borges. He studied poetics at the Australian National University (ANU) and in Toronto, Canada, from 1971 to 1986.
