Judith L. Rapoport
Judith L. Rapoport is an American psychiatrist. She is the chief of the Child Psychiatry Branch at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. Her research focuses on diagnosis in child psychiatry, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and obsessive–compulsive disorder. Rapoport’s research group at NIMH also studies clinical phenomenology, neurobiology, and treatment of childhood-onset schizophrenia. Rapoport is the author of the bestselling book, ''The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Washing: The Experience and Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder'' (Plume, 1989), about obsessive–compulsive disorder. Swarthmore ( , ) is a borough in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Swarthmore was originally named "Westdale" in honor of noted painter Benjamin West, who was one of the early residents of the town. Childhood Onset Schizophrenia
Childhood schizophrenia (also known as childhood-onset schizophrenia, and very early-onset schizophrenia) is similar in characteristics of schizophrenia that develops at a later age, but has an onset before the age of 13 years, and is more difficult to diagnose. Schizophrenia is characterized by positive symptoms that can include hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized speech; negative symptoms, such as blunted affect and avolition and apathy, and a number of cognitive impairments. Differential diagnosis is problematic since several other neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, language disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, also have signs and symptoms similar to childhood-onset schizophrenia. Massachusetts Mental Health Center
The Massachusetts Mental Health Center is a historic psychiatric hospital complex at 75 Fenwood Road in the Longwood medical area of Boston, Massachusetts. The center was founded in 1912 as the Boston Psychopathic Hospital. Its original main building and power plant were built that year, with additions in later decades including a therapeutic wing (1954) and research building (1957). The entire property was surrounded by an iron picket fence. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, representing one of the nation's oldest psychiatric hospitals. In 2009 the center's historic campus at 74 Fenwood Road was acquired by Partners HealthCare and demolished the following year. The center continues to operate in modern facilities at 75 Fenwood Road.
