Judith A. Markowitz Award
The Judith A. Markowitz Award for Exceptional New LGBTQ Writers, formerly known as the Dr. Betty Berzon Emerging Writer Award and established in 2013, is an annual literary award presented by the Lambda Literary Foundation. The award is granted to "LGBTQ-identified writers whose work demonstrates their strong potential for promising careers." The writers must "have published at least one but no more than two books of fiction, nonfiction or poetry." Two annual winners each receive a $2,500 cash prize. Lambda Literary Foundation
The Lambda Literary Foundation (also known as Lambda Literary) is an American LGBTQ literary organization whose mission is to nurture and advocate for LGBTQ writers, elevating the impact of their words to create community, preserve their legacies, and affirm the value of LGBTQ stories and lives. Function Lambda Literary traces its beginnings back to 1987 when L. Page (Deacon) Maccubbin, owner of Lambda Rising Bookstore in Washington, DC, published the first Lambda Book Report, which brought critical attention to LGBTQ books. The Lambda Literary Awards were born in 1989. Ching-In Chen
Ching-In Chen is a genderqueer Chinese American poet and multi-genre writer. They graduated from Tufts University, University of California, Riverside, and the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. They are the author of ''recombinant'', ''The Heart's Traffic'', and ''to make black paper sing.'' Chen is also the co-editor of the anthologies ''The'' ''Revolution Starts at Home: Confronting Intimate Violence Within Activist'' ''Communities'' and ''Here Is a Pen: An Anthology of West Coast Kundiman Poets.'' They are a Callaloo, Kundiman, and Lambda Fellow. Chen has taught in Sam Houston State University's English department, and currently teaches in the English and creative writing programs at the University of Washington Bothell. Lambda Literary Awards
Lambda Literary Awards, also known as the "Lammys", are awarded yearly by Lambda Literary to recognize the crucial role LGBTQ writers play in shaping the world. The Lammys celebrate the very best in LGBTQ literature.The awards were instituted in 1989. The program has grown from 14 awards in early years to 24 awards today. Early categories such as HIV/AIDS literature were dropped as the prominence of the AIDS crisis within the gay community waned, and categories for bisexual and transgender literature were added as the community became more inclusive. The Betty Berzon Emerging Writer Award is an annual literary award, presented by Publishing Triangle to honor achievement by an emerging LGBTQ writer.
