Jubilee (radio Program)
''Jubilee'' is an AFRS radio program that featured African American musicians and singers. It was broadcast to servicemen via AFRS from 1942 to 1953. ''Jubilee'' was conceived at least in part as a morale-building service for African American troops stationed overseas. The wartime host was Ernie "Bubbles" Whitman. Most of the shows were recorded before live audiences in Los Angeles. The series emerged as an important piece of black heritage. AFRS
The American Forces Network (AFN) is a government television and radio broadcast service the U.S. military provides to those stationed or assigned overseas. Headquartered at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, AFN's broadcast operations, which include global radio and television satellite feeds, emanate from the AFN Broadcast Center/Defense Media Center in Riverside, California. AFN was founded on 26 May 1942, in London as the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). History The American Forces Network can trace its origins to 26 May 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). A television service was first introduced in 1954 with a pilot station at Limestone Air Force Base, Maine. In 1954, the television mission of AFRS was officially recognized and AFRS (Armed Forces Radio Service) became AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio and Television Service). Ernest Whitman
Ernest Whitman (February 21, 1893 - August 5, 1954) was an American stage and screen actor. He was also billed in some Broadway plays as Ernest R. Whitman. Early years Whitman was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and was educated at Tuskegee Institute. He was ordained as a minister in 1907. His participation in Chautauquas led to his becoming an entertainer in vaudeville. Career Whitman debuted as an entertainer in Purcell, Oklahoma. He performed on stage in ''The Last Mile'' and other productions. He sang in a touring production of ''Lucky Sambo'' (1927).
