Juan Francisco Reyes (1749–1809), ''soldado de cuero'' ("leather-jacketed soldier") on the 1769 Portola expedition, '' alcalde'' (municipal magistrate) of the Pueblo de Los Angeles for three terms, and recipient of the Spanish land grant for Rancho Los Encinos and later Lompoc. Juan Francisco Reyes In 1769 Francisco Reyes, left his home in Mexico to join the Spanish army and to accompany Fr. Junípero Serra on his journey to establish the California missions. Francisco Reyes served at Monterey and San Luis Obispo and was stationed at Mission San Antonio de Padua during its construction. In 1784, Francisco Reyes received the Spanish land grant, Rancho Los Encinos, which comprised what is now the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California. He used the land for cattle ranching. Californios
Californio (plural Californios) is a term used to designate a Hispanic Californians, Hispanic Californian, especially those descended from Spanish and Mexican settlers of the 17th through 19th centuries. California's Spanish language, Spanish-speaking community has resided there since 1683 and is made up of varying Spaniards, Spanish and Mexicans, Mexican origins, including Criollo people, criollos, Mestizos, Indigenous peoples of California, Indigenous Californian peoples, and small numbers of Mulatos. Rancho La Brea
Rancho La Brea was a Mexican land grant in present-day Los Angeles County, California, given in 1828 to Antonio Jose Rocha and Nemisio Dominguez by José Antonio Carrillo, the alcalde of Los Angeles. Rancho La Brea consisted of one square league of land of what is now Wilshire's Miracle Mile, Hollywood, and parts of West Hollywood. The grant included the famous La Brea Tar Pits. History The title awarded by the alcalde in 1828 was confirmed by José María de Echeandía, governor of Alta California; in 1840, it was reconfirmed by Governor Juan Alvarado. With the cession of California to the United States after the Mexican–American War, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided that the land grants would be honored. Ysidro Reyes
Ysidro Reyes (1813–1863) was a Los Angeles-based business man and grandson of Juan Francisco Reyes, the first ''alcalde'' (mayor) of the Los Angeles pueblo. Life Reyes acquired half of a Mexican Land Grant called the Rancho Boca de Santa Monica, splitting with Francisco Marquez many acres of land located in present-day Santa Monica Canyon, the Pacific Palisades, and parts of Topanga Canyon. Ysidro's father, Juan Francisco Reyes, was a mixed-race settler from Mexico who arrived in Los Angeles shortly after the original settlers of 1781. Juan Francisco Reyes was a soldier and businessman, receiving and selling land-grants from the Spanish Crown including Rancho Los Encinos and Lompoc. Rancho La Ballona
Rancho La Ballona was a Mexican land grant in the present-day Westside region of Los Angeles County, Southern California. The rancho was confirmed by Alta California Governor Juan Alvarado in 1839, to Ygnacio and Augustin Machado and Felipe and Tomas Talamantes. The Machados and Talamanteses had already been given a Spanish concession to graze their cattle on this land in 1819. Many Machado and Talamantes family members of the late 19th century and early 20th century are buried at the north edge of the former Mexican Rancho La Ballona at a cemetery on Pico Boulevard, which was known as the La Ballona Cemetery, later in 1876 as the Ballona Township Cemetery, and then as the Woodlawn Cemetery of Santa Monica in the early 20th century.
