Juan Everardo Nithard
Juan Everardo Nithard (''Johann Eberhard Nithard'', in German) (Falkenstein (Upper Austria), 8 December 1607 – Rome, 1 February 1681) was an Austrian priest of the Society of Jesus, confessor of Mariana of Austria (Queen and Regent of Spain), cardinal, and ''valido'' (royal favorite) of Spain. Biography Born in a Catholic family in Tirol, at the age of 21 he entered the Society of Jesus and studied at the University of Graz. Emperor Ferdinand III made him preceptor of his children Leopold and Mariana. When Archduchess Mariana married her maternal uncle King Philip IV of Spain in 1649, Nithard accompanied her as her confessor to the Spanish Court. When the King died, Queen Mariana became regent for her four-year-old son Charles. She made Nithard Grand Inquisitor in 1666, which gave him access to the Regency Board, from where he became the most important person of the Spanish Court. John Joseph of Austria or John of Austria (the Younger) ( es, Don Juan José de Austria; 7 April 1629 – 17 September 1679) was a Spanish general and political figure. He was the only illegitimate son of Philip IV of Spain to be acknowledged by the King and trained for military command and political administration. Don John advanced the causes of the Spanish Crown militarily and diplomatically at Naples, Sicily, Catalonia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Dunkirk and other fronts. He was the governor of the Southern Netherlands from 1656 to 1659. He remained a popular hero even as the fortunes of Imperial Spain began to decline. His feuds with his father's widow, Queen Mariana, led to a 1677 palace coup through which he exiled Mariana and took control of the monarchy of his half-brother Charles II of Spain. Diego Sarmiento de Valladares (1615 – 29 January 1695) was a Spanish bishop who was Grand Inquisitor of Spain from 1669 to 1695. Biography Diego Sarmiento de Valladares was born in Vigo in 1615, the son of Luis Sarmiento, señor de Valladares and Inés de Arines Romay, señora de Camos. He was closely related to Jose Sarmiento de Valladares y Arines Romay, 1st Duke of Atrisco and Viceroy of New Spain. Valladares was ordained as a priest on 4 October 1667. He was appointed Bishop of Oviedo on 30 January 1668. He was translated on 17 September 1668, becoming Bishop of Plasencia. Charles II of Spain also named him president of the Council of Castile at this time, and he held that post until 1669. In 1669, he became Grand Inquisitor of Spain. He resigned his bishopric on 26 April 1677 but remained Grand Inquisitor until his death. Pascual De Aragón
Pascual de Aragón y Córdoba (1626 – 28 September 1677) was a Spanish nobleman and cleric. He served as Viceroy of Naples and as Archbishop of Toledo. Biography Born in Mataró, Province of Barcelona, as son of Enrique de Aragón Folc de Cardona y Córdoba, Aragón was ordained a priest in 1655. In 1661, aged thirty-five, he was created Cardinal-Priest of Sainte Balbine by Pope Alexander VII. However, he did not participate in the Conclaves held in his lifetime. In 1664, King Philip IV of Spain appointed him Viceroy of Naples. In 1666, he was replaced by his brother, Pedro Antonio de Aragón, as he was called back to Spain to become Archbishop of Toledo. Aragón had enjoyed the patronage of the previous Archbishop, Baltasar Moscoso y Sandoval, and upon the latter's death in 1665 had been nominated to succeed him.
