Juan Antonio Mogel
Joan Antonio Mogel Urkiza (in Spanish, Juan Antonio Moguel Urquiza) (1745–1804) was a Basque writer of the 18th century and author of one of the most important pieces of Basque classical literature, '' Peru Abarka'', the first novel written in that language. Finished by the author in 1782, this book was not published until 1880 — in installments that came out in a newspaper. In 1881, it was published as a book for the first time. Mogel was the uncle and teacher of translator and writer Vicenta Moguel (also known by her Basque name Bizenta Mogel) who was the first woman to write in the Basque language. Vicenta Moguel
Vicenta Antonia Moguel Elguezábal (Azcoitia, 1782 - Abanto, 1854) was a Spanish writer and translator who was the first woman to write in the Basque language. In Basque Country, she is known by the local spelling of her name, Bizenta Mogel Elgezabal. Early life and education Moguel was born in 1782 in Azkoitia, in a part of Northern Spain known as the Basque Country. She was very young when her father died and moved with her brother Juan José to live in Markina with her uncle, the priest and writer Juan Antonio Moguel (1745 - 1804). He was a scholar and author of the first novel in the Basque language, ''Peru Abarca'' (1802), and he was a friend of Felix Maria de Samaniego (1745-1801), a Spanish writer famous for his fables. Markina-Xemein
Markina-Xemein is a town and municipality located in the province of Biscay, Bizkaia, in the Basque Autonomous Community, also known as the Basque Country, located in northern Spain. The origin of the town's name lies in its geographic location. The last town in the province of Bizkaia, Markina-Xemein lies between Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia.
