Joyce Holmberg
Joyce Mina Lundeen Holmberg (née Lundeen; June 19, 1930 – March 20, 2017) was an American politician and educator. Born in Rockford, Illinois, Holmberg graduated from East High School in Rockford and was married to Eugene Holmberg. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Northern Illinois University and her master's degree in counseling psychology from Adler School of Professional Psychology. She also did graduate work at Rockford University. Holmberg worked as a teacher in the Rockford Public Schools and was an instructor at Rock Valley College. In the 1982 general election, Holmberg defeated Republican incumbent W. Timothy Simms to represent the 34th legislative district. Rockford is a city in Winnebago County, Illinois, located in the far northern part of the state. Situated on the banks of the Rock River, Rockford is the county seat of Winnebago County (a small portion of the city is located in Ogle County). The largest city in Illinois outside of the Chicago metropolitan area, Rockford is the fifth-largest city in the state and the 171st most populous in the United States. According to 2020 U.S. Census data, the City of Rockford had a population of 148,655 with an outlying metropolitan area population of 348,360. Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a public research university in DeKalb, Illinois. It was founded as Northern Illinois State Normal School on May 22, 1895, by Illinois Governor John P. Altgeld as part of an expansion of the state's system for producing college-educated teachers.
