Joy Cummings
Joyce Anne Cummings, ( Plumbe; 23 December 1923 – 1 July 2003) was an Australian politician. She was the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, and Australia's first female Lord Mayor, from 1974 to 1976 and again from 1977 until 1984, when she retired from politics following a severe stroke. Personal life Cummings was born Joyce Anne Plumbe on 23 December 1923 at Ramsgate, New South Wales, to Charlotte and Dallas Plumbe. She moved to the Newcastle area at the onset of the Second World War when her father, a fireman, was transferred to the Scott Street Brigade. It was here that she met and married Ray Cummings, who was also a fireman, together raising a family of four children. Cummings is the maternal grandmother of actress Sarah Wynter. Political career Cummings became a member of the Australian Labor Party in 1938, at the age of 15, and later entered local politics in 1968. This is a list of mayors and lord mayors of Newcastle and its predecessors, a Local government in Australia, local government area of New South Wales, Australia. The official title of Lord Mayors while holding office is: The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Newcastle. First incorporated on 7 June 1859 as the "Municipality of Newcastle", the council became known as "The Borough of Newcastle" on 23 December 1867 following the enactment of The Municipalities Act of 1867, and on 1 April 1938 the "City of Greater Newcastle" was proclaimed. In recognition of Newcastle's role as NSW's second oldest and largest city, the council applied to have the title "Lord Mayor", which was granted in October 1947 by King George VI and applied in October 1948. Blackbutt Reserve
Blackbutt Reserve is a nature reserve in the Newcastle, New South Wales, Newcastle region of New South Wales, Australia. Location Blackbutt Reserve is located between New Lambton, New South Wales, New Lambton and Kotara, New South Wales, Kotara. The north and west of the reserve is on Lookout Road and the south is on Carnley Avenue. Since the 1960s, captive animals were displayed, and barbecues and picnic tables were gradually added. In 2014, during construction of a new amenity building at the Carnley Avenue Recreation Area, an old brick lined mine shaft from the 19th century was discovered. The recreation area of the reserve known as Richley Reserve was named after Joe Richley, the president of the Northern Parks and Playground Movement, who was very involved in preservation of the reserve. Mudgee is a town in the Central West (New South Wales), Central West of New South Wales, Australia. The John Hunter Hospital and John Hunter Children's Hospital (sometimes known as the JHH and JHCH respectively, or more colloquially The John Hunter) is the principal referral centre and a tertiary hospital for Newcastle, and northern New South Wales, Australia.
