''Journey to the Urge Within'' is the debut album by English saxophonist Courtney Pine. It was released on the Verve label in 1986. Reception Allmusic awarded the album with 4 stars and its review by Scott Yanow states: "This early Courtney Pine recording (the tenor saxophonist was 22 at the time) features some of the most promising black English jazz musicians of the time, including Pine (who also plays some bass clarinet and soprano), singer Cleveland Watkiss (who often is reminiscent of Bobby McFerrin), vibraphonist Orphy Robinson, and pianist Julian Joseph."Yanow, S. Courtney Pine
Courtney Pine, (born 18 March 1964), is a British jazz musician, who was the principal founder in the 1980s of the black British band the Jazz Warriors. Although known primarily for his saxophone playing, Pine is a multi-instrumentalist, also playing the flute, clarinet, bass clarinet and keyboards. On his 2011 album, ''Europa'', he plays almost exclusively bass clarinet. Background Pine's parents were Jamaican immigrants, his father a carpenter and his mother a housing manager. As a child, he wanted to be an astronaut. Courtney is a name of Old French origin, introduced into England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. It has two quite distinct interpretations: firstly, the surname may be locational, from places called Courtenay in the regions of Loiret and Gâtinais. Cleveland Watkiss
Cleveland Watkiss, (born 21 October 1959), is a British vocalist, actor, and composer. Biography Cleveland Watkiss was born in Hackney, East London, to Jamaican parents, and was one of nine children. He is the older brother of pianist Trevor Watkis (and the different spelling of their surname is deliberate). At age 16, he won twice in a local singing talent competition, hosted by "FatMan" of FatMan Sound System (North East London Based Roots, Reggae & Dub Sound System). Watkiss studied at the London School of Singing with opera coach Arnold Rose and subsequently at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Lionel Grigson. Susaye Greene
Susaye Greene (born September 13, 1948) is an American singer and songwriter. She was the last official member to join the Motown girl group The Supremes, remaining in the group during its final years of existence from 1976 to 1977. She is a successful songwriter as well, having written hit records for Michael Jackson, Deniece Williams, and many others. Mark Mondesir
Mark Mondesir (born 12 December 1964) is an English jazz drummer. His brother, Michael Mondesir, is a bass guitarist. Career Mondesir was born in Stepney, London, on 12 December 1964. Mondesir began his career in 1984 as part of Ian Carr's workshops at the Weekend Arts Center. Mondesir worked with Courtney Pine between 1985 and 1989 and recorded with Kevin Eubanks in 1991. In the 1990s, Mondesir accompanied musicians who were visiting the UK; these included Art Farmer, Hermeto Pascoal and John Scofield. Mondesir played with Pee Wee Ellis's Assembly in 1996. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he was part of bands led by pianist Julian Joseph. Mondesir was part of guitarist John McLaughlin's 4th Dimension Band for their '' To the One'' album, which was recorded in 2009. The band was also featured on the ''Live @ Belgrade'' DVD from 2008. Gary Crosby (bassist)
Gary Crosby (born 26 January 1955) is a British jazz double bassist, composer, music arranger, and educator. He was a founding member of the celebrated group the Jazz Warriors in the 1980s and has worked with many top international artists. Also a bandleader, record producer, company director and facilitator, he leads Gary Crosby's Nu Troop, Jazz Jamaica, Jazz Jamaica All Stars and is the founder of Nu Civilisation Orchestra. Crosby is Co-founder and Artistic Director of Tomorrow's Warriors, a talent development organisation and charity co-founded in 1991 with his partner Janine Irons. In 1996 Crosby and Irons established Dune Music, a company that encompasses artist management, a record label, music publishing, and education. Martin Taylor, MBE (born 20 October 1956) is a British jazz guitarist who has performed in groups, guitar ensembles, and as an accompanist. Biography Early life Taylor was born in Harlow, Essex, into a family with a musical heritage and a Gypsy tradition. At the age of four, he received his first guitar from his father, jazz bassist William 'Buck' Taylor who only took up music at 30. Buck frequently played the music of the Quintette du Hot Club de France, so the young Martin Taylor became inspired by guitarist Django Reinhardt. At age eight, he was already playing in his father's band and at 15 he quit school to become a professional musician. Orphy Robinson
Orphy Robinson MBE (born 13 October 1960) is a British jazz multi-instrumentalist who plays vibraphone, keyboards, saxophone, trumpet, piano, marimba, steelpans and drums. He has written music for television, film and theatre. Career Robinson began his professional career with the band Savanna in the late 1970s. During the mid- to late-1980s, he was a member of the Jazz Warriors with Courtney Pine, and worked with Mica Paris and Andy Sheppard. In the 1990s, Robinson released two critically acclaimed solo albums: ''When Tomorrow Comes'' and ''The Vibes Describes''. Julian Raphael Nathaniel Joseph (born 11 May 1966) is a British jazz pianist, bandleader, composer, arranger, and broadcaster. Biography Joseph was born in London and attended Allfarthing Primary School and Spencer Park Secondary School in Wandsworth. He has worked solo, in his big band, trio, quartet, forum project band or electric band. Joseph works in both contemporary music, contemporary and traditional music, traditional situations with his music. He is also active in jazz education helping to form the jazz syllabus for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in Great Britain. Leblanc, Inc. was a musical instruments manufacturing company based in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The company was a woodwind instrument manufacturer known mainly for its clarinets. In 2004 the firm was sold to Conn-Selmer, a division of Steinway Musical Instruments. As a result, Leblanc ceased to exist as an independent operation, becoming a brand.
