The ''Journal of Criminal Law & Criminology'' ("JCLC") is a peer review, peer-reviewed, student-run academic journal published by the Northwestern University School of Law. Student editors select and edit articles submitted by professors, scholars, judges, practitioners, and students. The ''Journal'' publishes four issues per year, and hosts an annual Symposium focused on a select topic of criminal law. History The journal was established in 1910 as the ''Journal of the American Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology'' by Dean John Henry Wigmore. From 1931 to 1951 it was named ''Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology'' and from 1951 to 1972 ''The Journal of Criminal Law, Criminology, and Police Science''. It received its current name in 1973. The ''Journal'' was an outgrowth of the "National Conference on Criminal Law and Criminology," hosted at Northwestern University School of Law in 1909 in celebration of the law school's fiftieth anniversary. Criminal Law
Criminal law is the body of law that relates to crime. It prescribes conduct perceived as threatening, harmful, or otherwise endangering to the property, health, safety, and moral welfare of people inclusive of one's self. Most criminal law is established by statute, which is to say that the laws are enacted by a legislature. Criminal law includes the punishment and rehabilitation of people who violate such laws. Criminal law varies according to jurisdiction, and differs from civil law, where emphasis is more on dispute resolution and victim compensation, rather than on punishment or rehabilitation. Criminal procedure is a formalized official activity that authenticates the fact of commission of a crime and authorizes punitive or rehabilitative treatment of the offender.
