Lum And Abner
''Lum and Abner'' was an American network radio comedy program created by Chester Lauck and Norris Goff that was aired from 1931 to 1954. Modeled on life in the small town of Waters, Arkansas, near where Lauck and Goff grew up, the show proved immensely popular. In 1936, Waters changed its name to "Pine Ridge" after the show's fictional town. Synopsis The series was created by co-stars Chester Lauck (who played Columbus "Lum" Edwards) and Norris Goff (Abner Peabody). Lum always pronounced his own name as Ed'erds and was very annoyed if Abner or anyone brought up his full first name. The two characters performed as a double act, with Lum generally playing the straight man to Abner's attempts to break free from Lum's influence. Pine Ridge is an unincorporated community in Hale Township, Caddo County, Oklahoma, United States. It is located south of Fort Cobb at the junction of County Road 1380 and County Street 2550. History According to locals, the community got its name from the community of Pine Ridge, Arkansas, that was the setting of the radio show ''Lum and Abner'' which aired from 1934 to 1952. Legend says that the owner of the grocery store named it "Pine Ridge" after the radio show and over time the name was adopted as the name of the whole community. During the community's heyday in the 1940s there was a hub of activity at the main junction of the Ozark Trail and the Fort Cobb road, with a grocery store and two churches, Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church and Pine Ridge Church of Christ (founded on May 1, 1949 but later merged into the Fort Cobb Church of Christ. Pine Ridge is an unincorporated community in Oden Township, Montgomery County, Arkansas, United States. It is located at . The original name was Waters, but the name was changed in 1936 to Pine Ridge through a vote of the city's town council. Waters was the basis for the fictional town of Pine Ridge, Arkansas on the radio show ''Lum and Abner'', and the name of the real town was changed to honor and match the fictional one that made it famous. Since that time, Pine Ridge has lost its incorporation and no longer has a municipal government. The two oldest buildings in Pine Ridge, the Huddleston Store and McKinzie Store, both of which date to the first decade of the 20th century, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and currently serve as a Lum and Abner museum and replica of the "Jot'em Down" general store heard in the radio series. Mulberry is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Surry County, North Carolina. The center of the community is roughly the intersection of Mulberry Church Road and Poplar Springs Road. Located on Mulberry Church Road is Mulberry Primitive Church and cemetery, the oldest church in the community and the origin of the community's name. The community is sometimes referred to as Jot-Um-Down for a former local community store that took this nickname from the Lum and Abner radio show. Landmarks in Mulberry include the Mulberry Primitive Baptist Church and cemetery, Bessie's Chapel church and Jot-Um-Down Volunteer Fire Department. A nineteenth century United States post office, named Venable, stood near here and was named for then area resident and Surry County sheriff, Stephen G. Venable. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.
