José María Vargas (historian)
Fray José María Vargas Arévalo O.P. (1902–1988) was an Ecuadorian Dominican friar, writer, and historian. Biography He was born in Chordeleg, province of Azuay, Ecuador on November 9, 1902. He became an ordained priest on December 28, 1928. He wrote a biography of Fray Pedro Bedón and one about Fray Domingo de Santo Tomás. He received Ecuador's National Prize "Premio Eugenio Espejo The ''Premio Nacional Eugenio Espejo'' ("Eugenio Espejo National Award") is the national prize of the nation of Ecuador. Decrees 677 and 699 (of August 1975 and September 1997, respectively) established the prize, which is conferred by the President ..." in the Culture category in 1984. Fray Pedro Bedón Díaz de Pineda ( – ) was a South American Dominican friar and painter of the Quito school. Biography Fray Pedro Bedón was born in 1556 in Quito, then part of the Viceroyalty of Peru (present-day Ecuador). He entered the novitiate of the Dominican order at the age of fourteen, completed his studies in Lima, and was then appointed professor of philosophy in the college of that city. He studied painting under Italian artist Bernardo Bitti in Lima.
