José Manuel Cortina
José Manuel de Cortina y García (; 3 February 1880 in San Diego de Nuñez, Pinar del Río, Cuba – 9 March 1970 in Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida USA) was a Cuban politician, lawyer and journalist. Biography Cortina was the son of Constantino de Cortina y Arteaga, an agriculturalist of Basque descent, and wife María Luisa García y Gutiérrez. He graduated from the Colegio de Belén (1898) and graduated as a lawyer in 1903. He wrote for ''Democracia'', ''El Mundo'', ''La Lucha'', ''La Revista de Derecho'', and ''La Nación''. Cortina was first elected to public office in 1908 as a member of the Cuban House of Representatives and was later elected to the Cuban Senate. He served as Secretary of the Presidency under Alfredo Zayas y Alfonso. In 1927, he was the Cuban delegate to the League of Nations. He was Cuba's Foreign Minister from 1936–1937 under the presidency of Miguel Mariano Gómez and again from 1940–1942 under the presidency of Fulgencio Batista. C ... Camagüey Province
Camagüey () is the largest of the provinces of Cuba. Its capital is Camagüey. Other towns include Florida and Nuevitas. Geography Camagüey is mostly low lying, with no major hills or mountain ranges passing through the province. Numerous large cays (including what used to be one of Fidel Castro's favourite fishing spots; the Archipiélago Jardines de la Reina) characterize the southern coasts, while the northern coast is lined by Jardines del Rey of the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago. Sandy beaches are found on both coasts also, and despite a large potential for tourism, the province has seen little development in that area with the exception of Santa Lucía beach, on the province's North coast. Aileen Maria Marty is an infectious disease expert and a professor at the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. Early life and education Born in Havana, Cuba, Marty moved to the United States, at the age of four years old, when her family left Cuba following the Cuban Revolution of 1959, moving first to Venezuela and then to the United States. She joined the United States Navy, and while in the Navy graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1982. In the Navy, Marty achieved the rank of Commander in the mid-1990s. She was appointed to the Homeland Defense Committee in 2001 by Admiral James A. Zimble. She was in the Navy for 25 years, and retired in 2003. Career Marty is known for her work on infectious diseases, including Zika fever in Miami, Ebola, COVID-19, and monkeypox.
