José Malhoa (singer)
José Vital Branco Malhoa, known simply as José Malhoa (28 April 1855 - 26 October 1933) was a Portugal, Portuguese painter. Biography Malhoa was, with Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, the leading name in Portuguese naturalism (visual art), naturalist painting in the second half of the 19th century. He often painted popular scenes and subjects, like his two most famous paintings: ''The Drunks'' (1907) and ''Fado'' (1910). He always remained faithful to the naturalist style, but in some of his works there are impressionist influences, as in his ''Autumn'' (1918), that can be considered an "impressionist exercise". Malhoa was born in Caldas da Rainha, and studied art at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon from the age of 12. He died in Figueiró dos Vinhos, aged 78. Caldas da Rainha () is a medium-sized Portuguese city in the Oeste region, in the historical province of Estremadura, and in the district of Leiria. The city serves as the seat of the larger municipality of the same name and of the Comunidade Intermunicipal do Oeste (OesteCIM, Intermunicipal Community of the West). At the 2011 census, the municipality had a population of 51,729 in an area of , with 30,343 residing in the city. Although the city itself lies about inland, three of the municipality's civil parishes lie on the Atlantic Ocean. Caldas da Rainha is best known for its sulphurous hot springs and ceramic pottery.
