José Luis Serna Alzate
José Luis Serna Alzate (17 February 193628 September 2014) was a Catholic Church bishop. Born in the Second Spanish Republic town of Aranzazu on 17 February 1936, José Luis Serna Alzate was ordained a Catholic priest on 23 December 1961. On 15 November 1978, Serna Alzate was appointed as both the vicar apostolic of Florencia, Caquetá in Colombia, as well as the titular bishop of Cartennae. A titular bishop in various churches is a bishop who is not in charge of a diocese. By definition, a bishop is an "overseer" of a community of the faithful, so when a priest is ordained a bishop, the tradition of the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox churches is that he be ordained for a specific place. There are more bishops than there are functioning dioceses. Therefore, a priest appointed not to head a diocese as its diocesan bishop but to be an auxiliary bishop, a papal diplomat, or an official of the Roman Curia is appointed to a titular see.
