José Gregorio Briceño
José Gregorio Briceño Torrealba (born July 25, 1965, in Caicara) is a Venezuelan politician. Life Briceño began his political life in 1979 as a member of Acción Democrática (AD). After being expelled from AD in 1991 Briceño founded a political party called Movimiento Independiente Cedeño (MIC). He became mayor of Cedeño Municipality in the regional elections of 1992 and was re-elected in 1995. In 1997 he founded a new political party named MIGATO. This became part of PSUV in 2007. Briceño ran unsuccessfully for the governor of Monagas' office in 1998; however he won a seat in the Venezuelan Chamber of Deputies as Deputy. In 1999 Briceño was a member of the Constituent Assembly. 2008 Venezuelan Regional Elections
The 2008 regional elections of Venezuela were held on 23 November 2008 to choose 22 governors and 2 metropolitan mayors. The candidates were selected for a term beginning in 2008 and ending in 2012, when the next regional elections will be held. The 2008 regional elections were the second during the government of Hugo Chávez Frías and the first since he founded the United Socialist Party. The government of the state of Amazonas and nine municipalities were not chosen in this elections because they had been elected after the 2004 regional elections. The Venezuelan opposition managed to attain the metropolitan municipality of Caracas, won by candidate Antonio Ledezma, as well as five state governments; the United Socialist Party, meanwhile, won seventeen. MIGATO Politicians
MIGATO (abbreviation of ''Movimiento Independiente Ganamos Todos'', lit. 'Everybody Wins Independent Movement') is a political party in Venezuela. Migato was founded in 1997 by José Gregorio Briceño, the mayor of Cedeño Municipality of Monagas State. "El gato" (the cat) is his nickname and "mi gato" means "my cat". At the 2000 Venezuelan parliamentary election, the party won 1 out of 165 seats in the National Assembly of Venezuela. Briceño was elected as the governor of Monagas in 2004. The 2005 election gave it 1 National Assembly seat again. Though their influence was significant in Monagas, both victories were mainly due to the alliance with the Fifth Republic Movement, which was the party of the president Hugo Chávez. It merged into PSUV on 2007-10-20. In March 2012, Briceño re-founded MIGATO when he was suspended by the PSUV over an oil spill in Monagas, which poisoned the water of the Guarapiche River that the PSUV leaders were claiming was safe to drink.
