José Finkel Trophy
The José Finkel Trophy is a Brazilian competition played by teams in individual and relay swimming events. It is also known as the Brazilian Open Winter Championship and / or the Brazilian Open Short Course Pool Championship, despite being sporadically played in the Long Course Pool. It is one of the most notable events nationwide. Its first edition took place in 1972 in Curitiba and had Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas as champion. The most recent edition took place in the city of Curitiba in September 2019. The trophy is marked by the hegemony of the clubs in the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Its name is a tribute to the promising swimmer from Paraná, José Finkel, who died in 1971 as a result of cancer. The Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports ( pt, Confederação Brasileira de Desportos Aquáticos; CBDA) is the governing body of aquatic sports in Brazil. It was founded as the ''Brazilian Swimming Confederation'' ( pt, Confederação Brasileira de Natação; ''CBN'') on 21 October 1977 after dismembering from the Confederação Brasileira de Desportos, Brazilian Sports Confederation. The confederation was renamed in 1988 to reflect all modalities it manages: swimming, open water, water polo, diving and artistic swimming. The Esporte Clube Pinheiros, founded on 7 September 1899, by German immigrants, under the name Sport Club Germânia (Sport Club Germany), is a multi-sports and social club located in the Brazilian metropolis São Paulo. Minas Tênis Clube (short, just ''Minas'') is a social, recreational and sports club from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. By 2013, it has more than 73,000 members. Its patrimony comprises two urban units, the Minas I and Minas II, and two country units, Minas Country and Minas Tênis Náutico Clube. It also has its own indoor arena, named Juscelino Kubitschek Arena, which is a part of the Minas I complex. Palhoça is a municipality in Santa Catarina, Brazil. History Palhoça was founded in 1793, when the city was part of the way between Lages and Florianópolis in order to protect the capital state from possible invasions.
