José E. Benedicto
José Eladio Benedicto y Geigel (March 21, 1880 – July 24, 1924) was the Treasurer of Puerto Rico, and briefly served as acting governor of Puerto Rico in 1921. In his early life, Benedicto attended the Complutense University of Madrid, University of Madrid, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1902, he graduated with a law degree from the University of Michigan Law School and was licensed to practice in Michigan and Puerto Rico. He subsequently was appointed as a district attorney of Arecibo, Puerto Rico. He also worked as a law professor at the University of Puerto Rico. In 1908, he was appointed as treasurer. During World War I, Benedicto was partly responsible for a campaign to advertise the sale of Liberty Bonds on the island. This plan would ultimately bring in nearly $10 million for the war effort, or approximately $9 per person in the territory. The University of Puerto Rico School of Law is a law school in Puerto Rico. It is one of the professional graduate schools of University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus and the only law school in the University of Puerto Rico System.
