Josip Torbar (scientist)
Josip Torbar (1824–1900) was a Croatian natural scientist, educator and politician. Torbar was born in Krašić. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1849. His scientific works spanned biology, geology, meteorology and history of science. In 1866 Torbar became one of 12 original members of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts, and served as its chairman from 1890 until his death. Krašić is a village and municipality in central Croatia, located near Jastrebarsko and Ozalj, south of Žumberak and north of Kupa, about 50 km southwest of Zagreb. Pavao Muhić
Pavao Muhić (1 January 1811 - 17 October 1897) was a Croatian lawyer and politician. He was born in Požega. He taught as a professor of political science and cameralism at the School of the Royal Academy of Science (1835-1850) and at the Law Academy (1850-1871), where he also served as a director. He was a member of the Croatian Parliament in 1861-1866, and the Head of the Department for Education and Religious Affairs of the Provincial Government of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia in 1872-1881. Tadija Smičiklas
Tadija "Tade" Smičiklas (1 October 1843 – 8 June 1914) was a Croatian historian and politician. He was a professor at the Zagreb university and a member of the Croatian Academy. A member of the Illyrianist People's Party, he supported the independence of Croatia from the Austrian Empire. He authored the first history book on Croatia and laid the foundation of Croatian historiography. Early life Smičiklas was born in Reštovo in Žumberak (german: Sichelburg), into a Greek-Catholic family. Greek-Catholics in Žumberak, including Smičiklas, are descendants of Uskoks. His father Ilija sent a request on 13 August 1853 to the Greek-Catholic bishop of Križevci, Gabrijel Smičiklas (his relative), to accept Tadija free of charge into the Greek Catholic Seminary in Zagreb and stressed Tadija's talent and wish to learn more. The Croats (; hr, Hrvati ) are a South Slavic ethnic group who share a common Croatian ancestry, culture, history and language.
