Joseph Whipple, III
Joseph Whipple III (July 3, 1725 – 1761) was a merchant in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, and a Deputy Governor of the colony. The son of Deputy Governor Joseph Whipple Jr. who was a very wealthy merchant, Whipple was born in Newport, the second of nine children. He must have had very good political connections because he became Deputy Governor aged 25, but two years later he became financially insolvent, and was forced to give up his position in 1753. He had to sell the farm left to him in his father's will and liquidate other properties to pay his debts. Many ship owners went bankrupt in the middle of the 18th century. The use of paper money got part of the blame for this, but the protracted war with Spain and France had a major impact on commerce. The young and inexperienced Whipple had not yet developed the business acumen to avert these financial difficulties. William Greene (colonial Governor)
William Greene Sr. (16 March 1695 – 23 January 1758) was a governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. He was a clerk of the county court in Providence, deputy from Warwick, speaker of the Rhode Island Assembly, and then deputy governor from 1740 to 1743. He became governor for the first time in 1743 and served four separate terms for a total of 11 years, and died while in office during his final term. Ancestry William Greene was the son of Samuel Greene (1671-1720) and Mary Gorton Greene (1673-1732), and grandson of John Greene Jr. of Warwick, who had spent most of his long life as a public servant, including 10 years as the Deputy Governor of the colony. Robert Hazard (Rhode Island Politician)
Robert Hazard (12 September 1702 – 1751) was a deputy governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Early life Hazard was the son of Stephen Hazard of South Kingstown in the Rhode Island colony, his grandfather was Robert Hazard of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and his great grandfather was Thomas Hazard who settled in Portsmouth by way of Boston. Hazard was a first cousin of George Hazard who was an earlier deputy governor of the colony. Career Robert Hazard became a freeman of South Kingstown in 1722. In 1734, he became a Deputy in Rhode Island's General Assembly, which position he held through 1749. In 1750, he was elected Deputy Governor of the colony, serving for less than a full one-year term, from May 1750 until his death in 1751. Hazard lived at Point Judith, at the southern extreme of South Kingstown, on land that he inherited from his father. The Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations was one of the original Thirteen Colonies established on the east coast of America, bordering the Atlantic Ocean.
