Joseph W. Holehouse
Joseph William Holehouse (1836–1900) was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Biography Holehouse was born on July 5, 1836, in Stalybridge, England. His father, Joseph Holehouse (1814–1875), brought the family over to Wisconsin, purchasing land there in 1848. Joseph William married Wilhelmina Bridget "Millie" Larkins (1848–1925). They would have seven children. Holehouse died on March 13, 1900, in West Bend, Wisconsin. Career Holehouse was a member of the Assembly in 1881 and 1882. Wisconsin State Assembly
The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, elected during the fall elections. If a vacancy occurs in an Assembly seat between elections, it may be filled only by a special election. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. Since 1973, the state has been divided into 99 Assembly districts apportioned amongst the state based on population as determined by the decennial census, for a total of 99 representatives. Stalybridge () is a town in Tameside, Greater Manchester, England, with a population of 23,731 at the 2011 Census. West Bend is the county seat of Washington County, Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 31,752. History Early history and settlement Northeastern Washington County's earliest known inhabitants were pre-Columbian Mound Builders, who constructed effigy mounds in the area sometime between 650 CE and 1300 CE. They were semi-nomadic and survived by hunting, fishing, and gathering wild plants. They made pottery and constructed tools from bone, wood, stone, and occasionally copper. They built effigy mounds shaped like mammals, reptiles, birds and other creatures, both real and mythical, as well as conical, oval, and linear mounds, some of which contain human burials. Barton, Wisconsin
Barton is a town in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,546 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated community of Young America is located in the town. History The settlement of Barton began in 1845, when a land surveyor named Barton Salisbury arrived in the area from Mequon, and identified the rapids on the Milwaukee River as a potential source of hydropower. He built a sawmill, and soon other settlers arrived in the area, which was called Salisbury's Mills at the time. Salisbury went on to found the Village of Newburg before he died in a construction accident in 1849. In 1848, the state legislature created the Town of Newark from land that had previously been part of the Town of West Bend, and in 1853 the Washington County Board of Supervisors changed the name to the Town of Barton in honor of Barton Salisbury.
