Joseph Sintès
Joseph Sintès (1829, Alaior – 1913, Algiers) was a Spanish-born painter who lived in Algeria. He is known for his urban scenes and landscapes in Orientalist style. Biography His family emigrated to Algeria in the early 1830s during a period when many Menorcans went there to meet the need for horticulturists, arboriculturists and market gardeners. At the beginning of his career, he benefitted from the advice of several French painters there, including Horace Vernet, who was painting scenes from the recent military conquest. At first, he painted portraits for wealthy clients who were vacationing in North Africa; many from Scandinavia. Aimé, Duc De Clermont-Tonnerre
Aimé-Marie-Gaspard, comte de Clermont-Tonnerre (27 November 1779 – 8 January 1865) was a French general and statesman. Son of Gaspard-Paulin, vicomte de Clermont-Tonnerre and Anne-Marie- Louise Bernard de Boulainvilliers, and grandson of the Marquis de Boulainvilliers, Clermont-Tonnerre lived during the revolution with his grandfather. Life He entered the École Polytechnique, before entering the army. He participated in the campaigns in Italy, Germany and Spain and was made adjudant of the King of Naples in 1808, in whose service he stayed afterwards. He married Charlotte de Cauvoisin and in 1814 returned to the French army as a colonel, was Maréchal de Camp and after the second return of the king, was made Peer of France and commander of the cavalry of the guard. Clermont-Tonnerre sided with the moderate conservative party and was named Minister of the Navy and the Colonies in 1820 by Villèle. The National Museum of Fine Arts in Algiers (french: Musée national des Beaux-Arts d'Alger) is one of the largest art museums in Africa. Opened to the public since 5 May 1930, it is located in the Hamma district, next to the Hamma test garden. The museum, with its 8,000 works, includes paintings, drawings, engravings and old prints, sculptures, old furniture and decorative art, ceramics, glassware, as well as a numismatic collection.
