Joseph P. Vachon
Joseph Peter Vachon (23 January 1887 – 31 December 1961) was a retired United States Army brigadier general. During World War II, he commanded the 101st Division during the Philippines campaign and then spent more than three years as a prisoner of war after being ordered to surrender in May 1942. Early life and education Vachon was raised in Westbrook, Maine, where he graduated from Westbrook High School in 1904. He later graduated from the Army Infantry School advanced course in 1928 and the Command and General Staff School in 1929. Military career Vachon enlisted in the Coast Artillery Corps in November 1904. He served until November 1907, advancing from private to sergeant. Vachon reenlisted in the Coast Artillery Corps in June 1908, again advancing from private to sergeant. In February 1912, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Philippine Scouts. The Philippine Scouts (Filipino: ''Maghahanap ng Pilipinas'' or ''Hukbong Maghahanap ng Pilipinas'') was a military organization of the United States Army from 1901 until after the end of World War II. These troops were generally Filipinos and Filipino-Americans assigned to the United States Army Philippine Department, under the command of American commissioned officers (though a handful of Filipino Americans received commissions from the United States Military Academy). Philippine Scout units were given the suffix "(PS)", to distinguish them from other U.S. Army units. Mindanao ( ) ( Jawi: مينداناو) is the second-largest island in the Philippines, after Luzon, and seventh-most populous island in the world. Visayas-Mindanao Force
Visayas-Mindanao Force (Filipino: ''Hukbong Lakas ng Visayas at Mindanao''; Cebuano: ''Puwersa sa Visayas ug Mindanao'') was a military formation created in November 1941 to command all soldiers of US Army, US Philippine Scouts, Philippine Army, and Philippine Constabulary in the southern islands (Visayas and Mindanao) of the Philippines. Colonel William F. Sharp was appointed as commanding general and was promoted to Brigadier General in November 1941 and later Major General. His executive officer is Major Howard Edmands. He was just starting to organize his command and train his soldiers into a fighting unit when the war started on December 7, 1941. San Francisco National Cemetery
San Francisco National Cemetery is a United States national cemetery, located in the Presidio of San Francisco, California. Because of the name and location, it is frequently confused with Golden Gate National Cemetery, a few miles south of the city. About 1937, San Francisco residents voted to no longer build cemeteries within the city proper and, as a result, the site for a new national cemetery was selected south of the city limits. The cemetery is one of only four officially existing within San Francisco city limits (the others being the Columbarium of San Francisco, the historic graveyard next to Mission Dolores, and the sarcophagus of Thomas Starr King).
