Joseph Oliver (politician)
Joseph Oliver (1852 – January 8, 1922) was Mayor of Toronto from 1908 to 1909. Born in Erin, Ontario, Oliver lived in Toronto since he was three years old. He worked in the lumber business. He was elected to the School Board in 1885 and to the Toronto City Council in 1895,1901, 1902,1903 (also Toronto Board of Control) and 1906. He was elected mayor in 1908 and 1909. He was President of the Canadian National Exhibition Association in 1914 and 1915. He was also the Grand Sire of the Sovereign Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows of America from 1920 to the date of his death having been with the organization for almost 50 years. He was the last Liberal to be elected mayor in Toronto before Allan A. Lamport in 1951. Emerson Coatsworth
Emerson Coatsworth, Jr., KC (March 9, 1854 – May 11, 1943) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He was also a member of the Orange Order in Canada. Born in Toronto, Coatsworth was educated at the public schools, and studied privately for matriculation into the Law Society. Afterwards he attended Osgoode Hall Law School, and graduated in law in University of Toronto in 1886. A practicing lawyer, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Toronto East in the 1891 federal election. A Conservative, he was defeated in the 1896 election by Independent Conservative John Ross Robertson. In 1904, he was elected an alderman for the Toronto City Council. 1909 Toronto Municipal Election
Municipal elections were held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on January 1, 1909. Joseph Oliver was easily re-elected to his second term as Mayor of Toronto. One of the central issues of the campaign was whether the city should construct a bridge over the Don River connecting Bloor Street to Danforth Avenue. A referendum was held as part of the vote, and the bridge was approved. It would be built as the Prince Edward Viaduct. George Reginald Geary
George Reginald Geary, (August 12, 1872 – April 30, 1954) was a Canadian politician. He was a Conservative member of the House of Commons from 1925 to 1935. He also served as Mayor of Toronto from 1910 to 1912. Background Born August 12, 1872, in Strathroy, Ontario, the Geary family moved to Sarnia, Ontario, when Geary was age one. He attended and graduated from Toronto's Upper Canada College. He graduated from the University of Toronto law school in 1896 where he was a Member of Alpha Delta Phi. Geary enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on January 7, 1915. He served in World War I and was awarded the Military Cross and the French Legion of Honour. Toronto Board Of Control
The Board of Control of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was a part of its municipal government until it was abolished in 1969. It served as the executive committee of the Toronto City Council. When it was initially created in 1896 by mandate of the provincial government, it consisted of three Controllers appointed from and by the aldermen, and presided over by the Mayor of Toronto. Beginning in 1904, the Board of Control was directly elected by the city's electorate and consisted of four Controllers, presided over by the Mayor.
