Joseph N. Macaluso Sr.
Joseph Nicholas Macaluso Sr. (born March 10, 1928) is an American musician, counselor, teacher, administrator, veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and retired colonel. He is also an author, Italian-American Civic Award recipient, and civic leader. Early life Born March 10, 1928 in New Orleans, Louisiana (Algiers) into a family of immigrants from Contessa Entellina, (Nicholas J. Macaluso Sr.) and Giuliana, Sicily (Frances Mary Calabrese) he was the second of three sons. Trumpet lessons commenced in the early 1930s after receiving his first trumpet, made by Regent, bought at Werlein's a fixture in New Orleans music at that time. With that trumpet came 8 free lessons at All State Band on St. Charles Avenue, a local music venue owned by noted cornetist Johnny Wiggs. Later, lessons were taken with a local black Creole trumpeter, Manuel Manetta. Belle Chasse ( ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana, United States, on the west bank of the Mississippi River. __NOTOC__ The Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) is a military award presented to members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguished themselves by outstanding meritorious achievement or service to the United States subsequent to January 16, 1969. The MSM was previously awarded as a decoration for achievement during peacetime, but effective September 11, 2001 this decoration may also be bestowed in lieu of the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in a designated combat theater. The Mistick Krewe of Comus, founded in 1856, is a New Orleans, Louisiana, Carnival Krewe. It is the oldest continuous organization of New Orleans Mardi Gras festivities. Rex (founded 1872) is a New Orleans Carnival Krewe which stages one of the city's most celebrated parades on Mardi Gras Day. Rex is Latin for "King", and Rex reigns as "The King of Carnival". History and formation Rex was organized by New Orleans businessmen in part to put on a spectacle in honor of the New Orleans visit of Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich of Russia (remembered locally as "Grand Duke Alexis") during the 1872 Carnival season. Also in the minds of the founders of Rex was the desire to lure tourism and business to New Orleans in the years after the American Civil War.
