John Joseph Lee
John Joseph Lee (born 9 July 1942) (commonly known as J.J. Lee), is an Irish historian and former senator. He has held the chairs of Modern History in University College Cork and Professor of History and Glucksman Professor for Irish Studies and Director of Glucksman Ireland House, at New York University. Biography Born in Tralee, County Kerry, he spent his early years in Castlegregory in the same county. He also lived for some years in Ballinasloe, County Galway, where he attended national school. In 1954, he was awarded a Galway County Council scholarship to attend Gormanston College, County Meath. He graduated in 1962 from University College Dublin with first-class honours in History and Economics. He completed his MA some years later on the history of the railways in nineteenth-century Ireland. He was also a graduate student of Peterhouse, Cambridge. Joseph Johnston Lee (1876–1949) was a Scottish journalist, artist and poet, who chronicled life in the trenches and as a prisoner of war during World War I. He is also remembered for his dispute with then poet laureate Robert Bridges over the literary value of Robert Burns' work. He has been described as "Scotland's 'Forgotten' War Poet", as well as "Dundee's forgotten war poet." Biography Early life and career Born in Dundee, in 1876 Joseph Johnston Lee was the grandson of Sergeant David Lee, who had fought in the Napoleonic Wars, and was one of nine siblings. Joseph Lee (March 8, 1862July 28, 1937) was a wealthy Bostonian who trained as a lawyer but never practiced law, and is considered the "founder of the playground movement". He was a social worker, author, and philanthropist. Lee believed that community life could be strengthened by playgrounds and play. Lee was also a proponent of eugenics and a major financial supporter of the Immigration Restriction League, a Boston-based group that promoted race-based eugenics as a basis for restricting immigration from eastern and southern Europe. Background Joseph Lee was born on March 8, 1862, in Brookline, Massachusetts, to Elizabeth Perkins (Cabot) and Henry Lee, a banker. In 1897, Lee married Margaret Cabot. They had four children. Joseph Lee Kok-long (born 14 August 1959, Macau) is a former member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (Legco), representing the Health Services functional constituency. He is a member of the Pro-democracy camp. Lee is a nurse and a Professor and Dean in the School of Nursing and Health Studies at the Open University of Hong Kong. Joseph Lee (1901-1991) was an American politician who served ten terms on the Boston School Committee. Early life Lee was born in 1901 in Boston. His father, Joseph Lee, was a recreation advocate and Boston School Committee member known as the "father of the American playground". His grandfather, was a founder of Lee, Higginson & Co. He graduated from Harvard College in 1922 and then attended the University of Texas. After graduating, Lee worked on a ranch in Wyoming, the Fore River Shipyard in Massachusetts, and was a reporter for the ''Boston Post''. He also worked for fourteen years as a freelance writer. Joseph Lee (July 4, 1848 June 11, 1908) was an American baker and inventor. He successfully managed a hotel in Needham, Massachusetts for about a decade and later managed restaurants near Boston, ran a resort in Squantum, and ran a successful catering company. Lee was also an innovator, creating machines that successfully automated the process of kneading bread and making breadcrumbs. In recognition of these successes, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2019. Biography Joseph Lee was born in Charleston, South Carolina on July 4, 1848 to Susan and Henry Lee, who were both enslaved, and grew up in South Carolina, also enslaved. Joseph Lee, the residential part of Bayview, is a neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Part of the larger Bayview or Hopkins Bayview neighborhood, it borders the Greektown neighborhood. It is sometimes called the "A to K" or "ABC neighborhood" because its north-south streets are arranged in alphabetical order: Anglesea, Bonsal, Cornwall, Drew, Elrino, Folcroft, Gusryan, Hornel, Imla, Joplin, and Kane. Most of the homes in the community are traditional Baltimore row homes. The earliest houses, built in the 1920s, are in the western portion of the neighborhood and generally have three bedrooms.
