Joseph Jean Benoit
Major-General Jean Joseph Benoit (14 February 1932 – 18 January 2024) was the 31st Canadian Surgeon General. Early life Born in Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec, Benoit was educated at Laval University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1950, and a Medical Doctorate in 1958. He also completed post-graduate studies in anesthesiology at the University of Toronto between 1962 and 1964. Career Upon entering medical school in 1952, Benny, as Benoit was called by his colleagues, joined the Canadian Officer Training Corps (COTC). He was commissioned as a second lieutenant and attached to the 2nd Battalion of the Royal 22nd Regiment, and then sent to Germany. In 1956, Benoit transferred from the Infantry to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). His first posting in 1958 was to a Pine Tree Line radar station in Parent, Quebec, as the station physician. Surgeon General (Canada)
The Surgeon General ( French: ''médecin-général'') is the professional head of the Canadian military health jurisdiction, the adviser to the Minister of National Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff on all matters related to health, and head of the Royal Canadian Medical Service. The Surgeon General may also be appointed the commander of the Canadian Forces Health Services Group, which fulfils all military health system functions from education and clinical services to research and public health. It consists of the Royal Canadian Medical Service, the Royal Canadian Dental Corps, personnel from other branches of the armed forces, and civilians, with health professionals from over 45 occupations and specialties in over 125 units and detachments across Canada and abroad. Churchill, Manitoba
Churchill is a town in northern Manitoba, Canada, on the west shore of Hudson Bay, roughly from the Manitoba–Nunavut border. It is most famous for the many polar bears that move toward the shore from inland in the autumn, leading to the nickname "Polar Bear Capital of the World" that has benefited its burgeoning tourism industry. National Defence Medical Centre
The National Defence Medical Centre (NDMC) was the national and largest hospital of the Canadian Forces in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It served the needs of the members of the military. Constructed in 1961, it was closed in the 1990s due to budget cutbacks in National Defence and Veterans' Affairs Canada. The building now houses Canadian Forces Health Services Group Headquarters, the CF Health Services Centre Ottawa, the 33 Canadian Brigade Group headquarters, and other military units.
