Joseph Hughes (politician)
Joseph Hughes (18 September 1905 – 20 January 1960) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Carlow–Kilkenny (Dáil constituency), Carlow–Kilkenny constituency from 1948 to 1960. Hughes worked as a farmer in County Kilkenny before entering politics. He was elected as a Fine Gael Teachta Dála, TD at the 1948 Irish general election, 1948 general election for Carlow–Kilkenny (Dáil constituency), Carlow–Kilkenny, and held the seat until his death in 1960, aged 54. The 1960 Carlow–Kilkenny by-election, resulting by-election for his seat was held on 23 June 1960 won by the Fianna Fáil candidate Patrick Teehan. A Teachta Dála ( , ; plural ), abbreviated as TD (plural ''TDanna'' in Irish, TDs in English), is a member of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament). It is the equivalent of terms such as ''Member of Parliament'' (MP) or '' Member of Congress'' used in other countries. The official translation of the term is "Deputy to the Dáil", although a more literal translation is "Assembly Delegate". Overview For electoral purposes, the Republic of Ireland is divided into areas known as constituencies, each of which elects three, four, or five TDs. Under the Constitution, every 20,000 to 30,000 people must be represented by at least one TD. A candidate to become a TD must be an Irish citizen and over 21 years of age. Fianna Fáil (, ; meaning 'Soldiers of Destiny' or 'Warriors of Fál'), officially Fianna Fáil – The Republican Party ( ga, audio=ga-Fianna Fáil.ogg, Fianna Fáil – An Páirtà Poblachtánach), is a conservative and Christian-democratic political party in Ireland. Patrick James Teehan (14 April 1904 – 25 December 1985) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician, auctioneer and farmer who served as a Senator for the Administrative Panel from 1951 to 1960 and 1965 to 1969 and a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Carlow–Kilkenny constituency from 1960 to 1961. He was elected to Seanad Éireann as a Senator for the Administrative Panel at the 1951 Seanad election, and was re-elected to the Seanad in 1954 and 1957. The 1948 Irish general election to the 13th Dáil was held on Wednesday, 4 February following the dissolution of the 12th Dáil on 12 January 1948 by the President Seán T. O'Kelly on the request of Taoiseach Éamon de Valera. The general election took place in 40 constituencies throughout Ireland for 147 seats in Dáil Éireann, the house of representatives of the Oireachtas, with a revision of Dáil constituencies under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1947, which had increased the number of seats by 9 since the previous election. The election resulted in Fianna Fáil leaving government for the first time in 16 years and the formation of the first coalition government in Ireland.
