Joseph H. Pierce Jr.
Joseph H. Pierce Jr. (born June 24, 1927 – June 7, 2018) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse owner and trainer who won 2,256 races during his career. Joseph Pierce Jr. served with the United States Navy during World War II. The son of a horse trainer, Joseph Sr. was widely known as "Slim" and is remembered as the trainer of Chicle II for the Palatine Stable of Frank Rosen. After the War ended, Joseph Jr. learned the business from his father and in 1956 took out his own trainers license. The George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old fillies run over a distance of miles on the dirt annually at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. The event currently offers a purse of $250,000 History The event was inaugurated in 1919 as the Pimlico Oaks and was renamed in 1952 to its present name to complement the Preakness Stakes and to acknowledge the Maryland State flower. The Matchmaker Stakes is a Graded stakes race, Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for Filly, fillies and mares age three and older run over a distance of miles on the turf held annually in July at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. The General George Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually on Presidents' Day in mid February at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. The Jerome Stakes is a stakes race for thoroughbred horses run each January at Aqueduct Racetrack. Open to three year olds, the race is run at one mile and carries a purse of $150,000. It is a Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying race, with the winner receiving 10 points towards qualification for the Kentucky Derby. The Jerome is the second oldest stakes race in the United States behind the Travers Stakes. It is named after Leonard W. Spinaway Stakes
The Spinaway Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Open to two-year-old fillies, it is a Grade I event contested at a distance of seven furlongs (1,408 metres) on dirt. The Spinaway is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series, providing a "Win and You're In" berth for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. The race was named for Spinaway who in 1880 was the dominant two-year-old filly in the United States and who beat her male counterparts in every one of her seven stakes wins. Tyro Stakes
The Tyro Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually near in July at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. A non-graded stakes race offering a current purse of $60,000, it is open to two-year-old horses weighted at 122 pounds with allowances. It was a run on a dirt track from inception until 2012 when it became a race on turf. It is currently contested at a distance of five furlongs. Monmouth Oaks
The Monmouth Oaks is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey for three-year-old fillies. Named for England's Epsom Oaks, first run in 1779, the inaugural American edition took place in 1871. Originally raced over a distance of miles from 1871 through 1877, there was no race in 1878 but on its return the following year was modified to miles. In 1891, the New Jersey Legislature began a move to ban parimutuel betting and the Oaks had to be moved to the Jerome Park Racetrack in The Bronx, New York. With a legislated permanent ban, after the 1893 running the Monmouth Park Racetrack was shut down and the property sold. In 1946, Thoroughbred racing returned to a new Monmouth Park racing facility. The revived Monmouth Oaks was set at 1 1/16 miles. The Jenny Wiley Stakes is a Grade I American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and Mares, age four and older over a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles on the turf held annually in early April at Keeneland Race Course, Lexington, Kentucky during the spring meeting. History The Jenny Wiley Stakes is named for Jenny Wiley, a pregnant pioneer woman captured in Kentucky by Native Americans in 1789 and who escaped after almost a year in captivity. The event was inaugurated on 17 April 1989 and was won by Native Mommy, ridden by Craig Perret to a length margin in a time of 1:43 over the miles distance.
