Joseph H. Gainer
Joseph Henry Gainer (January 18, 1878 – December 15, 1945) was the 26th mayor of Providence, Rhode Island. He served seven terms, from 1913 until 1927. Personal life Joseph Henry Gainer was born January 18, 1878, in Providence. His parents, John and Margaret (Keogh), were born in Ireland and settled in Providence's North End, where they operated a grocery store. Gainer's father died when he was four, and three of his four brothers died in infancy. Gainer graduated from LaSalle Academy in 1896. He received his bachelor's degree from Holy Cross College in 1899. He went on to earn a law degree at The Catholic University of America in 1902, and passed the Rhode Island bar examination the same year. Gainer practiced law in Providence, at one time partnering with future congressman George F. O'Shaunessy and Edward G. Carr under the name O'Shaunessy, Gainer, and Carr. Henry Fletcher (mayor)
Henry Fletcher (January 17, 1859 – August 26, 1953) was the 25th mayor of Providence, Rhode Island. Personal life Henry Fletcher was born in Birmingham, England, on January 17, 1859. His family moved to New Jersey, United States, when Henry was a small boy. By 1873, the family moved to Providence Rhode Island, where Henry attended public schools. He studied at Scholfield's Commercial College, a business school in Providence. Henry Fletcher married Hattie E. Bennett in 1883. She died in 1935. Three sons outlived him: Henry B. Fletcher Sr; R. Leslie Fletcher, president of the Providence Gas Company; and Paul W. Fletcher. A fourth son, Col. Edward G. Fletcher, died shortly after World War II. Kennedy Plaza
Kennedy Plaza, formerly Exchange Place, Exchange Terrace, or City Hall Park, is a rectangular public square that occupies a central portion of Downtown Providence, Rhode Island. Since the mid 19th century, the plaza has served as a civic and transportation hub. Today, Kennedy Plaza is bounded by Exchange Street to the northeast, Fulton Street to the southeast, Dorrance Street to the southwest, and Washington Street to the northwest. The plaza's northeastern and southwestern extremities are capped by three civic structures: City Hall, the Federal Building, and the John O. Pastore Federal Building. The Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame was established in the State of Rhode Island in 1965.
