Joseph Frank (cricketer)
Joseph Frank (17 December 1857 – 22 October 1940) was an English amateur first-class cricketer, who played one match for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 1881, against I Zingari at North Marine Road Ground, Scarborough. He also played first-class cricket for the Gentlemen of England in 1883 and 1886, the Gentlemen in 1883, the Rest of England in 1883, plus A. J. Webbe's XI in 1887. Born in Helmsley, Yorkshire, England, Frank came from a cricketing family. His elder brother Benjamin, and his father, played club cricket, with Joseph initially playing with Duncombe Park C.C. In total he played in seven first-class matches. His bowling was fast, but his action was suspect, and his biggest impact in the sport came when he played for the Scarborough & District against the Australians in 1880, when he damaged Fred Spofforth's finger an injury that prevented him from playing in the subsequent Test match at The Oval. Joseph Frank (23 December 1771, in Rastadt – 18 December 1842, in Como) was a German physician. Biography He was the son of physician Johann Peter Frank. He assisted his father in Pavia and Vienna, and became in 1804 a professor of pathology at Vilnius University. At Vilnius he founded a vaccination institute (1808), a maternity institute (1809) and an out-patients' clinic (1807). The Vilnius Medical Society was founded on his initiative. He retired in 1824 on account of a disease of the eyes, now thought to be pink eye. Work He was one of the more influential advocates of the Brunonian system of medicine, Brunonian system of physic, and published "''Grundriss der Pathologie nach den Gesetzen der Erregungstheorie''" (Vienna, 1803). As his career progressed, however, he became highly critical of Brunonianism. Joseph Lee (J.L.) Frank (April 15, 1900 - May 4, 1952) was an American music promoter known for his promotion of country music artists during the second quarter of the 20th century. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 1967. Joseph Frank (October 6, 1918 – February 27, 2013) was an American literary scholar and leading expert on the life and work of Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky. Frank's five-volume biography of Dostoevsky is frequently cited among the major literary biographies of the 20th century. Biography Joseph Frank was born Joseph Nathaniel Glassman on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1918. His father died when he was young, his mother remarried William Frank, and the family moved to Brooklyn. Frank attended classes at New York University in the 1930s and the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the early 1940s, but never earned a Bachelor's degree. Frank went to Paris on a Fulbright Scholarship in 1950, and in 1952 he was accepted by the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago, where he eventually earned a Ph.D. In 1953, he married mathematician Marguerite Frank. Joe Samuel Frank (November 14, 1942 – October 27, 2022) was an American politician who was the mayor of Newport News, Virginia. A native of Newport News, and a lawyer, he was first elected mayor for the term starting July 1, 1996. He was re-elected in May 1998, 2002, and 2006. His last term expired on June 30, 2010. He was the first directly-elected mayor in the history of the city. Frank was an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award in 2009. In honor to this occasion, the Captain's Lounge in the Rappahannock Scout Camp at Bayport Scout Reservation was to be named in his honor. Frank was a father and grandfather.
