Joseph Fleming (politician)
Joseph Fleming (6 January 1811 – 23 September 1891) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Politics On 22 June 1860, William Nelson, one of the three members for West Moreton, was unseated by petition. Joseph Fleming was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the resulting by-election on 9 July 1860. Fleming held the seat until he resigned on 3 November 1862 when he became bankrupt. Joshua Peter Bell won the resulting by-election on 15 December 1862. On 7 August 1866, the Premier of Queensland and member for West Moreton, Robert Herbert, resigned. Joseph Fleming won the resulting by-election on 11 September 1866. He held the seat until 2 July 1867 (the 1867 election) when he was defeated by Joshua Peter Bell (sitting member), Patrick O'Sullivan and George Thorn. In 2017 a crypt in an unmarked section of Ipswich General Cemetery was found to contain the remains of Fleming and his wife Phoebe. ... Electoral District Of West Moreton (Queensland)
West Moreton was the name of two incarnations of an Queensland Legislative Assembly electoral districts, electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. History The original district, named for the West Moreton, region it covered, took in all of the Brisbane River catchment area as well as Ipswich, Queensland, Ipswich and Laidley, Queensland, Laidley, bordering New South Wales to the south. It elected three members from 1860 to 1873 and one member from 1873 until its abolition in 1878. The district was re-created in 1932 to take in an area west of Brisbane. It was abolished in 1949. Queensland Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The University of Southern Queensland (branded as UniSQ and formerly branded as USQ) is a medium-sized, regional university based in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, with three university campuses at Toowoomba, Springfield and Ipswich. It offers courses in law, health, engineering, the sciences, business, education, and the arts. The institution was established in 1969 as the Darling Downs campus of the Queensland Institute of Technology. Ipswich General Cemetery
The Ipswich General Cemetery is a historic cemetery in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. It is the second oldest cemetery in Queensland. It is owned by Ipswich City Council, but the council have outsourced the day-to-day operations to a private contractor Norwood Park Limited, trading as Ipswich Cemeteries. Geography The cemetery is bounded by Warwick Road, Cooney Street, Parrott Street, Briggs Road and Cemetery Road. It is a denominational cemetery with sections allocated to Roman Catholic Church, Church of England, Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church, Congregational Church, Baptist Church, Lutheran Church, Christadelphian Church and Salvation Army. In addition, there are areas for pioneer graves and war graves. The Australian forces war graves (comprising 64 army and 24 air force personnel) are on a triangular plot, dominated by a Cross of Sacrifice. Patrick O'Sullivan (Queensland Politician)
Patrick O'Sullivan (14 March 1818 – 29 February 1904) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography O'Sullivan was born in Castlemaine, County Kerry, the son of William O'Sullivan, a soldier, and his wife Ellen (née Moriarty). O'Sullivan was also a soldier, and was stationed in London with his regiment when Queen Victoria succeeded to the throne in 1837. In January the next year, however, he was sentenced to fifteen years transportation for assault, thus missing the coronation by several months. The premier of Queensland is the head of government in the Australian state of Queensland. By convention the premier is the leader of the party with a parliamentary majority in the unicameral Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The premier is appointed by the Governor of Queensland.
