Joseph E. Edsall
Joseph E. Edsall (March 29, 1789, in Hamburg, New Jersey – February 17, 1865, in Hamburg, New Jersey) was an American Democratic Party politician, who represented in the United States House of Representatives from 1845 to 1847, and the from 1847 to 1849. Biography Edsall was born in Rudeville, near Hamburg, New Jersey, in 1789, and attended the common schools. He engaged in mercantile pursuits, and operated a distillery and a tannery. He served as county clerk, was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly, and served as judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Edsall was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth and Thirtieth Congresses, serving in office from March 4, 1845, to March 3, 1849. He died in Hamburg in 1865, and was interred there in the Baptist Burying Ground. External links Joseph E. The Political Graveyard is a website and database that catalogues information on more than 277,000 American political figures and political families, along with other information. The name comes from the website's inclusion of burial locations of the deceased (when known). It is also a pun; where bodies are buried can refer to the politicians accused of crimes or touched by scandal. History The site was created in 1996 by Lawrence Kestenbaum, then an academic specialist at Michigan State University, and later on staff at the University of Michigan. Kestenbaum was formerly a county commissioner, and in 2004 was elected to be County Clerk/Register of Deeds of Washtenaw County, Michigan. John Runk
John Runk (July 3, 1791 – September 22, 1872) was an American Whig Party politician, who represented New Jersey's 3rd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 1845 to 1847. Runk was born in Milltown (later, Idell), Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He attended the district schools and took charge of the mills and general store on his father's property in Milltown. He was a member of the Board of Chosen Freeholders from Kingwood Township from 1825 to 1833. He was an unsuccessful candidate for sheriff in 1830, and served as high sheriff of Hunterdon County from 1836 to 1838. Runk was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-ninth United States Congress (March 4, 1845 – March 3, 1847) in an election he won by just 16 votes. His opponent Isaac G. Farlee contested the election on the grounds that Princeton students, ineligible due to residency, had swung the election. John Van Dyke (April 3, 1807 – December 24, 1878) was an American jurist and Whig Party politician who represented in the United States House of Representatives from 1847 to 1851. Early life He was born on April 3, 1807 in the Lamington section of Bedminster Township in Somerset County, New Jersey. He was a son of Abraham Van Dyke and Sarah ( née Honeyman) Van Dyke. After completing his preparatory and law studies, Van Dyke was admitted to the Bar in 1836. Career He began practice in New Brunswick, New Jersey. In 1841, Van Dyke became prosecuting attorney of Middlesex County. A few years later, in 1846–1847, he served as president of the Bank of New Jersey at New Brunswick, while also serving as Mayor of New Brunswick, New Jersey.
