Joseph Darko Mensah
Joseph Darko-Mensah (22 February 1942 – 16 May 2011) was a Ghanaian politician and lawyer who served as a member of the third parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. He represented the Okaikwei North constituency in the Greater Accra Region under the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Political career Member of Parliament Darko-Mensah first assumed office as a parliamentarian in the years 1997 and 2001 after winning in the 1996 and 2000 parliamentary elections. He won a majority 33,067 votes in the 1996 Ghanaian general election and 36,511 votes in the 2000 Ghanaian general election on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party. He lost his seat to Madam Elizabeth K. Jerry John Rawlings
Jerry John Rawlings (22 June 194712 November 2020) was a Ghanaian military officer and politician who led the country for a brief period in 1979, and then from 1981 to 2001. He led a military junta until 1992, and then served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana. Rawlings came to power in Ghana as a flight lieutenant of the Ghana Air Force following a coup d'état in 1979. Prior to that, he led an unsuccessful coup attempt against the ruling military government on 15 May 1979, just five weeks before scheduled democratic elections were due to take place. After handing power over to a civilian government, he took back control of the country on 31 December 1981 as the chairman of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC). The National Convention Party (NCP) is a political party in Ghana that existed between 1992 and January 1996. Formation and Progressive Alliance The party was formed in 1992 after the ban on political parties was lifted by the military Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) government. Convention People's Party
The Convention People's Party (CPP) is a Socialism, socialist political party in Ghana based on the ideas of the first President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah. The CPP was formed in June 1949 after Nkrumah broke away from the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC). Nkrumah was the then appointed Secretaty General of the UGCC when he was arrested by the leader of the UGCC and imprisoned for an alleged thought, plans and power against Kwame Nkrumah's leadership. Kwame Nkrumah then formed the Convention People's Party with support of some UGCC members and had a purpose for self governance. National Democratic Congress (Ghana)
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a social democratic political party in Ghana, founded by Jerry Rawlings, who was Head of State of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and the President of Ghana from 1993 to 2001. Following the formation of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), which ruled Ghana following the military coup d'état on 31 December 1981, there was pressure from the international community to restore democracy. The NDC was formed as the ruling party ahead of elections in 1992, in which Rawlings was elected president, and in 1996 Rawlings was re-elected as the NDC candidate.
