Joseph D. Bryant
Joseph Decatur Bryant (March 12, 1845 April 7, 1914) was a surgeon, New York City Health Commissioner, Surgeon-General of the National Guard Surgeons and physician to Grover Cleveland and John D. Rockefeller. He also held a series of academic positions at Bellevue Hospital Medical College, culminating with the title of professor of the principles and practice of surgery, and professor of operative and clinical surgery, at New York University and Bellevue Hospital Medical College. Early life and education Joseph Decatur Bryant was born on a farm near Troy, Wisconsin Territory, on March 12, 1845, the only child of Alonzo Bryant and Harriet Adkins Bryant. He attended public school in Troy and when still a young boy, moved with his parents to the State of New York. Bryant attended Norwich Academy and received his medical degree from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1868. Troy is a town in Walworth County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,355 at the 2020 census. The unincorporated communities of Adams, Little Prairie, and Troy Center are located in the town. The ghost town of Mayhews was also located in the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.4 square miles (91.8 km2), of which, 34.7 square miles (90.0 km2) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2) of it (1.95%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 2,328 people, 837 households, and 660 families residing in the town. The population density was 67.0 people per square mile (25.9/km2). There were 904 housing units at an average density of 26.0 per square mile (10.0/km2). New York Academy Of Medicine
The New York Academy of Medicine (the Academy) is a health policy and advocacy organization founded in 1847 by a group of leading New York metropolitan area physicians as a voice for the medical profession in medical practice and public health reform. The early leaders of the academy were invested in the reform movements of the day and worked to improve public health by focusing on the living conditions of the poor. In 1866, the academy was instrumental in the establishment of the Metropolitan Board of Health, the first modern municipal public health authority in the United States and the precursor of today's Department of Health. In recent years the academy has functioned as an effective advocate in public health reform, as well as a major center for health education. As of 2016, the academy will celebrate its 169th year.
