Joseph Brebsom
Joseph Brebsom (1913 – 12 April 2005) was a Luxembourgish politician. A member of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP), Brebsom spent most of his career in the communal council of Esch-sur-Alzette. He rose to hold position as an '' échevin'' (1965–1969, 1970–1978) and Mayor (1978–1990), replacing the Communist Arthur Useldinger. The Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party ( lb, Lëtzebuerger Sozialistesch Aarbechterpartei, french: Parti ouvrier socialiste luxembourgeois, german: Luxemburger Sozialistische Arbeiterpartei), abbreviated to LSAP or POSL, is a social-democratic, pro-European political party in Luxembourg. An ''échevin'' ( lb, Schäffe; german: Schöffe), sometimes translated as alderman, is a member of the administration of a Luxembourgian commune. Together, they form the ''collège échevinal'' (german: Schöffenrat), which helps the mayor run the administration. In most communes, ''échevins'' have designated roles within the administration, adopting separate briefs as in a cabinet. ''Échevins'' are elected by the commune's council, and represent the make-up of the governing coalition. Formally, ''échevins'' of cities are named by the Grand Duke, whilst those of other communes are named by the Minister for the Interior.
