Joseph Ames (author)
Joseph Ames (23 January 1689 – 7 October 1759) was an England, English bibliographer and antiquary. He purportedly wrote an account of printing in England from 1471 to 1600 entitled ''Typographical Antiquities'' (1749). It is uncertain whether he was by occupation a ship's chandler, a pattern-maker, a plane iron maker or an ironmonger. Though never educated beyond grammar school, he prospered in trade and amassed valuable collections of rare books and antiquities.. Joseph Ames (naval Commander)
Joseph Ames (5 March 1619 – December 1695) was an English naval commander under the Commonwealth. Ames was born in Great Yarmouth on 5 March 1619. Brought up as a sailor from his youth, he was one of the commanders of a small Channel fleet watching the Dutch coast in 1641. In January 1653 he returned to Plymouth from Barbados, with a large consignment of sugar, which had only recently been planted in the island, and in July of the same year he was present at the engagement with the Dutch off the Texel in which Maarten Tromp was killed. "For eminent service in saving ye triumph fired in fight with the Dutch" on that occasion, a gold medal was awarded him by parliament. In succeeding years Ames was in command of several ships of war, and made repeated voyages to America and the West Indies. Joseph Alexander Ames
Joseph Alexander Ames (1816–1872) was an American artist, primarily known for portrait and genre painting. Biography Originally named Joseph Emes, he was born in Roxbury, New Hampshire. Ames began painting at a young age. At the age of twelve Henry Theodore Tuckerman wrote about one of his paintings. After moderate success at home in Saugus, Massachusetts, he left for Boston in 1841. While in Boston, Ames tried to replicate the style of Washington Allston. In 1848, Ames traveled to Rome, where he painted a portrait of Pope Pius IX that was featured at the National Academy of Design's annual exhibition in 1850. When he returned from Italy he was commissioned by Rufus Choate, Daniel Webster, and Abraham Lincoln. Joseph Bushnell Ames
Joseph Bushnell Ames (August 9, 1878 – June 20, 1928) was an American novelist during the early 20th century. Early life Joseph Bushnell Ames was born on August 9, 1878, in Titusville, Pennsylvania, the son of Elias Hurlbut Ames (1851-1891) and Eleanor Gray Bushnell (1855-1946). Both Ames' father and maternal grandfather, Joseph Bushnell (1831–1918), came from old New England families and became wealthy during the Pennsylvania Oil Rush. Ames' great-grandfather was the Pittsburgh industrialist Daniel Bushnell. After Elias Ames' death of pneumonia in 1891 at age 39, Joseph's mother moved the family to Morristown, New Jersey, where her children had a privileged upbringing in the town that was then known as an "inland Newport.". Ames attended St. Mark's School and the Stevens Institute of Technology, graduating from the latter in 1901. Joseph Sweetman Ames
Joseph Sweetman Ames (July 3, 1864 – June 24, 1943) was a physicist, professor at Johns Hopkins University, provost of the university from 1926 to 1929, and university president from 1929 to 1935. He is best remembered as one of the founding members of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA, the predecessor of NASA) and its longtime chairman (1919–1939). NASA Ames Research Center is named after him. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1911. He was the 1935 recipient of the Langley Gold Medal from the Smithsonian Institution. Ames was also an assistant editor of ''The Astrophysical Journal'' and associate editor of the '' American Journal of Science''; editor-in-chief of the ''Scientific Memoir Series''; and editor of Joseph von Fraunhofer's memoirs on ''Prismatic and Diffractive Spectra'' (1898).
