Joseph A. Langone, Jr.
Joseph A. Langone Jr. (1896–1960) was a Massachusetts state senator from 1933 to 1940, and was Boston Election Commissioner in the 1940s. Early life Langone was born in Boston on September 8, 1896. He attended St. Mary's Parochial School, Warren Grammar School, and English High School. His father, Joseph A. (Giuseppe Antonio) Langone Sr., was an Italian immigrant from Marsico Nuovo, Potenza, who opened a successful funeral home in Boston and is credited with bringing the Order of the Sons of Italy in America to Massachusetts. In 1907, Langone Sr. was awarded a bronze medal by the Italian government for "notable progress in business and finance and society". From 1923 to 1924, he represented the Fifth Suffolk District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Langone Park
Langone Park is a waterfront park in the North End of Boston, Massachusetts. Established in 1973, it is named for Massachusetts state senator Joseph A. Langone, Jr. and his wife Clementina Langone. The park features a Little League Baseball field, a playground, and three bocce courts. It is located on Commercial Street at the edge of Boston Harbor, immediately to the west of the Andrew P. Puopolo Jr. Athletic Field. The first park at the location, North End Beach (later North End Park), was established in 1893 as a public bathing facility. The park includes much of the area inundated by the 1919 Great Molasses Flood. To the southwest the park borders Copp's Hill Terrace and further south is Copp's Hill Burial Ground. Government Center, Boston
Government Center is an area in downtown Boston, centered on City Hall Plaza. Formerly the site of Scollay Square, it is now the location of Boston City Hall, courthouses, state and federal office buildings, and a major MBTA subway station, also called Government Center. Its development was controversial, as the project displaced thousands of residents and razed several hundred homes and businesses. Controversial in design since before it was completed, the use of Brutalist architecture for its main buildings, as well as the open brick-and-concrete plaza at the center of the development, have been alternately praised for its innovative design, and scorned for its lack of character and uninviting appearance. Boston Government Service Center
The Boston Government Service Center (BGSC) is a state government complex in the West End of Boston, Massachusetts. The center was designed in the Brutalist style, led by architect Paul Rudolph. It is one of the major components of the Government Center complex in Downtown Boston. The complex is made up of two connected Brutalist buildings: the Charles F. Hurley Building and the Erich Lindemann Building, as well as a courtyard; sometimes included is the newer, 1998-built, Edward W. Brooke Courthouse. The Hurley and Lindemann buildings are designated Category Two buildings in Boston, holding major significance for the city. The site is eligible for the state and national registers of historic places, and as a Boston Landmark. Roger Lowell Putnam (December 19, 1893 – November 24, 1972) was an American politician and businessman. A member of the prominent Lowell family of Boston, he served as Mayor of Springfield, Massachusetts, from 1937 until 1943, and as director of the Economic Stabilization Administration from 1951 until 1952. During his short tenure in federal office, the nation's steelworkers struck—leading United States President Harry S. Truman to seize the nation's steel mills. For 40 years, Putnam was also the sole trustee of the Lowell Observatory.
