Joseph A. Canning
Joseph A. Canning (October 31, 1882 – March 23, 1951) was an American Catholic Church, Catholic priest and Society of Jesus, Jesuit. Born in New York City, he studied at Xavier High School (New York City), St. Francis Xavier High School, before entering the Society of Jesus in 1898. He continued his studies at St. Andrew-on-Hudson and Woodstock College. He was ordained a Priesthood in the Catholic Church, priest in 1915, and spent the next eight years as a missionary in Jamaica. He returned to the United States in 1925, and was an administrator and teacher at Jesuit schools in Washington, D.C., New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. In 1934, he became the List of presidents of Loyola University Maryland, president of Loyola University Maryland, Loyola College in Maryland. Upon the end of his term four years later, he returned to St. Peter's Preparatory School, St. Peter's High School, and he died in Jersey City, New Jersey, Jersey City in 1951. Early life Joseph A. The Reverend is an style (manner of address), honorific style most often placed before the names of Christian clergy and Minister of religion, ministers. There are sometimes differences in the way the style is used in different countries and church traditions. ''The Reverend'' is correctly called a ''style'' but is often and in some dictionaries called a title, form of address, or title of respect. The style is also sometimes used by leaders in other religions such as Judaism and Buddhism. The term is an anglicisation of the Latin ''reverendus'', the style originally used in Latin documents in medieval Europe. It is the gerundive or future passive participle of the verb ''revereri'' ("to respect; to revere"), meaning "[one who is] to be revered/must be respected".
